Did I get ripped off by Orange Boxx?

First I’ll start by saying I am sad writing this. I go out of my way to support small family businesses, and I don’t mind waiting for services to be delivered if there are realistic expectations and clear communication.

I ordered an FJ cruiser MAX (cost with shipping $205.87 paid that same day) in a custom color, Brick, on December 29, 2020 at 12:59pm.

As of today the order status is still “processing” on the orange boxx website.

My understanding was that orders with custom colors can take up to 8 weeks.

After approximately 10 weeks, March 18, 2021 at 8:04pm, I email customer service to inquire about the status of my order. Twenty four hours passed (one business day) and I got no response. I emailed customer service again the next day, March 19, 2021 at 9:15pm, to inquire about my order. Twenty four hours passed - no response. Both times I stated I am not in a rush, but I’d just like an update on my order. I got no response.

I then called the customer service number on March 22, 2021 at 7:32pm (after business hours) and said I wasn’t in any hurry, but I would like a status update on my order as it has been over 10 weeks since the order was placed (and payment received) - no reply either a call back or an email. I then tried to call again 2 days later, March 24, 2021 at 3:51pm (during business hours). I received an answering machine and left another message. I’ve still received no response/call back. At this point I have made 4 separate contact attempts, and 5 business days have passed since the first inquiry with still no contact from Orange Boxx?

This leaves me wondering . . . have I been ripped off? Did they take my money and go out of business?

I am not even too concerned about the delay in fulfilling the order, but I am concerned that they will not return an email or a call. I looked at their facebook page and one other person has had a similar experience as me and Orange Boxx commented that he was only complaining because his friends ran a company that was a competitor of theirs. In my situation - I do not know anyone in any company that makes stuff for FJs, let alone stuff that competes with Orange Boxx. I actually was very interested in buying more Orange Boxx products (I am not so interested anymore). They have rave reviews on facebook for great customer service and keeping in constant contact with customers, sadly that has not been my experience.

March 29th, 4 days away, will be a full 3 months with my order not fulfilled, and no contact from Orange box except an account on their website that says “processing”.

If anyone knows the folks at Orange Boxx, or can give me a person to contact I would appreciate it. I just wanna make sure I haven’t paid 200 bucks for nothing.

I cant imagine anyone having rave reviews about their "customer service". There have been many people including myself who have had such negative experiences that the end result was just going through the credit card company to file a claim. I believe the owner/operator would be embarrassed if he were capable of enough humility to experience that emotion. Good luck to you; I'd cancel the order and look elsewhere.

I'm not sure if Springtail Solutions are still going strong or not.... but the products I got from them were top notch a few years ago.

X2 for springtail solutions. I ordered a product from them last fall and it is very well made and was promptly shipped. I dont have any experience with orange boxx, but have read of others having the same issue you are describing. Sorry for the misfortune, hopefully you can at least get a refund through your bank/CC company.

There have been a few complaints about Orange Boxx and also some good stories. Most of the bad is around customer service it appears.
Here was a recent (~4 months ago) one: Help with Orange Boxx rock slider installation.

That's a real shame to read all the above, specially the T4R forum thead.. not acceptable at all.

I made an order for the MAX side boxes + rear swing table beginning of last year, spoke with Darrel a few times on the phone over the course of the next few weeks and he managed to get it delivered 2 weeks before the expected date.

Guess I should point out I did have a negotiated hard-stop delivery date set in from the start, as it needed to be loaded onto a container ship then.

Hope you get your money back or your side boxes soon mate!

I ordered my orange box parts on the 24th of Febuary. I went into this knowing they have good products and horrible service. I called them before I placed the order, 5 minutes after and two weeks later to check status. They answered the phone on all 3 occasions. The dude who answered all 3 timesis definitely a bit rough around the edges. Bottom line....it worked out.

Im surprised your not not able to get someone on the phone. Keep trying. It'll work out and no I dont believe you got ripped off.

Victory 4x4 also makes some molle panels for the FJ if you cancel the OB order.

Same here!

Damn I wish I saw this thread earlier too. I was so stoked on picking up my FJ that I went nuts on some gear... including OB.

How did this all pan out in the end?
Refined Cycle is another company that makes similar products for the FJ

I wasn't aware Springtail was still making cargo mounts for the FJ. When I checked their website I remember seeing they discontinued the FJ cargo rack.

I thought about purchasing from Orange boxx in the past but the owner of that company showed up on some forums awhile back sounding very unprofessional. I mean if the owner is like that....explains why the customer service is so poor. I have little patience for poor customer support these days but that's just my two cents.

Update, I called again today 4 times before I got an extension that went to a person - design department. The guy who answered was very nice. I told him my story about the trouble I was having getting someone to return my correspondence. He apologized that no one returned my email and voicemail messages, and apologized for the delay in my product being shipped. Said it was due to powder coating. He said it will be shipped next Friday.

That is all I really wanted to hear. As long as my MAXX ships Friday I'm cool. Probably wouldn't purchase from them again, but all is good.

Now let's just hope I get my stuff in 2-3 weeks?

Happy to hear that you were able to speak w someone! Beleive me, I was a bit nervous about ordering from them but in the end i'm happy I did. Quality made stuff. Just a shame they have very poor service. What your dealing w is the reason I chose to not go w any custom colors. I just had a feeling it would take longer then expected.

Very relieved to read this. I went with the standard black as well. Hoping for not too crazy of a lead time. Thanks for taking one for the (Trail) Team!

Looking at the FAQ’s on their website.
It doesn’t seem like they hide the fact their service isn’t the best, in regards to shipping, contact or refunds. They mention long order times, in addition to delays. They also mention they allow customers to “pay more” to push their order ahead of others. (Basically accepting payments to cause further delays for others). Several references to the fact they don’t have the time or staff to return calls or email. They also don’t accept returns, unless defective. But even that reads as they won’t accept returns due to their requirements. And if they do it appears it only results in store credit.
All and all they don’t seem like customer service is their main concern. From the reviews and forum post it seems like if you order from them without any issues it’s great, but if you have any issues it’s a nightmare.

I personally plan on ordering from them. They make custom parts. So I see why it takes longer to get there products. You want returns on custom made parts ?
