I got rear ended on the right rear corner 3 weeks ago, and as I was driving from the accident, I heard some plastic rubbing against the tire so I cut it off. After getting my FJ fixed from the collision dept, I noticed the cast iron on the right rear tire well was exposed. This differs from the left side which has the covering. After 2-3 weeks of haggling with the service dept, their answer was that thats the way FJs are made. I trolled some Toyota dealerships, and behold, the rear tire wells are all different if you compare the right to the left. I don't know what I cut off... but I was sure that both rear tire wells would be equal. I don't know why Toyota put liner on the left but not on the right....

Could it be due to the heat of the exhaust system on the R side would damage the plastic?

It's probably like that because of the gas filler tube.
