DIY Home made Hi Lift Mount for under $50
(thanx to CHITOWNFJ who sent me all the info)

The parts needed to make the HL mount.

Parts from Lowe’s.

1 pkg (2 per pkg) 1/2 x 13 x 4" Stainless steel Cartridge bolt. $6.85

2x pkg (1 per pkg) 1/2 Coupler nut NOT STAINLESS $3.73x2= $7.46

1 pkg (2 per pkg) 1/2 x 13 wing Stainless steel nuts. $3.67

1 pkg (5 per pkg) 1/2 x13 Stainless steels plit lock washers
$3.13

1 pkg (5 per pkg) 1/2 Stainless steel flat washers
$3.83

Total $24.94 plus tax.
(dam how things are so expensive nowadays, this would have been much less a few months ago).

Two 1 ¾ aluminum clamps from ebay (Ebayer race_basics)
$9.99 x2 + SH (@ $4.72)=$24.70

You can save $$ by not using stainless steel. But it’ll be more prone to rust. Is it worth it? It is your choice.

All that needs to be done are cut the head off of the cartridge bolt.
Spray a little paint on the cut end to help reduce rust.
Wrap just enough Teflon tape to the cut head end (to help reduce dissimilar corrosion from taking place).
Screw the cut end into the clamp (this is done for cosmetic reason) so the cut cannot be seen. And make sure not to screw it down to far that it protrude to the other side or you will mar the roof rack when you goto clamp it down.
Tighten down the coupling nut to the clamp.

And you are done.

CHITOWNFJ"s clamp can been see on his build thread below.

Great stuff, I was looking for these clamps on ebay and couldn't locate them. Just ordered two of them... My wife got me a Hi Lift for my Bday, but I didn't want to spend $100 on the mounts. Now I can build my own...
