when you turn the steering all the way to the left or the right... it doesn't do that in H2...


is this a 4x4 thing or is something broken... you can try it on yours... stay in 4x2 mode (H2), turn the steering wheel all the way to one side or the other, accelarate slowly, the truck will turn fine... put it in 4x4 (H4) and do the same thing and its different. i have a auto 4x4 without the rear locking differential.


please explain. i've ready in other cars with powersteering to not hold the wheel fully to one side or the other as it could damage the power steering unit, but i don't think this is the case, here... something is different.

p.s. and i know it's know allignment or balancing issues... i know what those feel like.

Sounds like binding in the front axle. Don't turn the wheels completely to one side when driving in 4WD.


what does the "binding" mean... i'm guessing it has something to do with a limitation of the 4x4 on the road... and as soon as i felt it, i stopped... but you know what's funny, i didn't feel it on the dirt. maybe on the asphalt the tires stick to the ground too much...

You got i right. You don't want to be on asphalt and in 4 high and attempt to make "tight" turns. Here's a link to explain it.

in 4 low, your gearing is mutiplied by the ratiio of your Tcase. unless you are on a highsehear surface, like dirt, you can feel the binding of the wheels as when you steer you are actuall changeing the gearing of the front wheels. A bit easier to draw out that explain, but I draw as good as a 1st grader. So I will leave it like this, everthing is fine, you just need to either be going faster or be on a higher shear surface. Try backing up with the locker on and turning, you will really pop.

FANTASTIC! I LOVE TECHNICAL ANALYSIS OF HOW THINGS WORK... it's the anal rententive in me! AND the know-it-all...

the instruction manual says to drive at least 10 miles per month in 4x4... i'll hope to do that in the dirt, but if i can't, is it okay to drive in 4x4 on the street if i'm staying relatively straight? there would be little binding, in that case.

really cool how i could feel that something was different. glad it was a normal thing with 4x4's... i do wish i had the full-time now with locking differential, but will have to save that rig for when i grow up! LOL.

You don't want to be on a road at all and be in H4, you will destroy your drive train very quickly. This is the case for all 4x4s.

HERE IS YOUR EXCUSE - the perfect one for the spouse/other who complains that you are off road too often. You NEED to do it for the good of the FJ.

You thought you had lemons and you have lemonade!
