So I consider this a newbie thread because I am new to this, and haven't posted too much, and I'm very new to the electrical aspect. If this is in the wrong place feel free to redirect me.

I have searched, but I can't seem to get a specific answer to my query. So I recently installed a dual battery setup (dirty parts), and got a voltmeter to run with it. I hooked it up to the second battery, but obviously it is always running if I do that. How should I set it up to where it reads the second battery only when the vehicle is running? Should it be wired to the solenoid? To a new fuse box? Directly to the second battery?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Even redirecting me to a thread covering this, because I can't seem to locate one on my own, since admittedly my google-fu sucks.

I did the very exact same thing when I did my dual battery setup. I put toggle switches so that I could toggle between the two and measure each battery's voltage, and another switch to activate the solenoid with the AUX battery so that you could jump start your starter battery, if it were dead. I made a video of my install, and have a schematic you can reference with part numbers in the comments. Fast forward towards the end for the schematic.

Use a relay for the second volt meter.

Use an ignition power source from the fuse box to trigger the relay.

Find an old motorhome they have "boxes" for isolating the main batteries from the aux. They charge as need that way instead of constantly charging. Also allows for a second volt meter and the flick of a switch allows boosting of main battery if needed.
I used "boxes" as the correct term escapes me at the moment. I have one of them to use in my set up that I have yet to retreave and install ?.

I chose a different route but I thought I'd through it out in case others are looking for battery monitors.

I also have a Dirty Parts duel setup and I decided on this voltmeter from SolidKit in Australia. Since the meter has a low current drain, mine is on all the time. I have a fridge connected to my aux battery and sometimes I like to check the voltages before I start the truck or after a day of camping without having to turn the ignition on. You can also have it come on with the ignition by connecting the grounds through a relay.

Sweet, thanks for the replies. I will check out the relay, etc. I think I may have wired my fuse box incorrectly, since I added a USB as well, and that's constantly on too. I don't want to add a few things, but have them constantly on, so I will have to take a better look at it all. Or spend more time researching and looking at diagrams and jazz.

ETA, I just realized I wired the fuse box to the battery proper, not the relay that came with the kit. So in my limited understanding, that makes sense as to why everything is constant hot. Is that correct?
