Hello all, just finished reading entire thread. I have a 12 FJ. Last Dec. with around 60,000 miles( bought FJ with 10,000 miles), I changed out the original Dunlaps for Cooper Evolution H/T 275/70/17, same size as originals. The old tires still looked pretty good but the wife and I were going from Wis. to Tx with rain in the forecast so I wanted more tread on the road. We left for the trip a week after new tires installed. I never got the steering wheel vibration until I put new tires on. The roads going south were good condition and vibration occurred between 60-65 mph and sometimes went away over 70-80 mph, and then there were times when there was no vibration at 60-65 mph and than it would start up again. I had the tires rotated and still got the steering wheel vibration on and off. The new tires road and handled as nice as the old tires, I also noticed that going over rougher road surfaces at high or low speeds didn't always vibrate the steering wheel. Alignment also seems to be ok even with vibration and hands off wheel while at 60-65 mph. My first thought is that the guys putting on new tires may not have calibrated the balancer before installing tires so I may just go and have all 4 tires rebalanced. Any other thoughts?

Bought a '12 FJ with 80K on it this last summer. It had BFG 265X70X17 KO's on it that had about 1/2 treadwear left. Drove it for a couple of weeks and started reading this site when the "shimmy" showed up between 55-65 mph. Drove it to 92K and shimmy got worse. Took it to my local tire store to have them balance the tires. They jacked up the front end and hand spun the front wheels and you could see a "high" spot on the tires. Said they thought they had a belt separation problem. Also said that there is a "great" amount of weight stuck on the inside of the wheels + weights on the rims. Had purchased a set of Yokahama Geolander A/T GO15's of the same size as the BFG's on sale in July and put them in the shed to cure, so I went home picked them up and brought them back and had them mounted. When they took off the BFG's each one had 10-1oz weights glued inside of the wheel and 2-3 oz nailed onto the rim. My friend that owns the tire shop said that is one reason he doesn't handle BFG's as they are hard to balance and he doesn't find they hold up well? Took the beast out after the install and from a slow roll to 85 mph smooth as a marble....Love the YOKOS!!! Got 'em my Super Dutys with 40K and they are GREAT!!! cg
PS: the Yokos balanced with from 1 1/8-1 1/2 oz. on each one....cg

This really sucks that Toyota won't fix such a wide spread problem. I have a 2010 with the same problem. Someone mentioned they had luck with the Falken Wildpeak A/T 3W tire. Anyone else have information on a specific tire that helped. I'm currently running BFGoodrich A/T. I've had a shimmy come and go ever since I purchased in 2012. The dealer ship first told me I must have warped the roters within the first block after a service. $500 later I still had a shimmy.

I just replaced my old Cooper STT with the newer Cooper STT Pro and my highway shimmy has seemed to disappear. I had it with the factory tires and the original coopers. Had them balanced multiple times, even road force balanced. Granted these tires are brand new and time will tell if it comes back, but I'm happy it's gone for now.

I run 305/70/16.

After reading all the numerous threads on cause and effect with no real answers I’d like to share my story.
2007 FJ OEM rims were corroding so bad that they leaked air. Had front bearing replaced about a year ago due to failed speed sensor. After the bearing replacement the wheel shake started with increase force over time. So with Firestone tires not performing well (skid/spin) I chose to R&R with new tire/rims figuring it would resolve the wheel wobbles. Procured oem 17” TRD rims and Michelin 256/70R/17 Defender tires. Took it to local Meineke as they did previous work and when I went to pick it up they told me of the erratic wobble, and needed to keep FJ overnight. We discussed the potential causes and I researched this issue (thus this forum). After lengthy conversation with service manager on causes they went back and checked every issue out from rims to suspension.
Long story short the Front Struts were BAD and had leaked with no fluid present and the BRAND NEW Michelin tires from the warehouse were also FUBAR. So with new Struts and New new Michelin tires the wobble/shake is gone. It doesn’t ride real smooth like my Raptor but I expect that after a bit of wear and rebalance at the next rotation all will be good. Also they did do a Road Force Balance.
