I'm going on a trip to mountains (hills) of Tennessee this month to visit my parents. Other than visiting, my main goal is mobile (on the trip) and portable (while there).

I have 2 chameleon v1's to run single or dipole, a PAR end fed 10/20/40, a 20 and 40 meter hamstick and a mono band 40 meter inverted V. Only supports will be the truck, a tripod (5') And possibly trees. I ordered a neu-psk modem which is fully self contained and will only be operating SSB and digital. All operations will be from series wired 7amh batteries and a 25 watt solar panel. All of this fits into 2 pelican cases except the antennas and solar panel.

I'm curious as to what antennas people here are using for mobile HF and where they are mounted. The only spot I think will work okay while moving is on the front of my all pro bumper where the roller fairlead mounts. I have the triple light hoop, but it looks like the antenna will clear the rear of the light hoop. I don't have a bandi mount yet and don't think it would work. These antennas are 7' + tall.

Any suggestions thoughts ideas?

I have an 08 FJ and currently fun a Tarheel screwdriver mounted on a special bracket welded to the frame at the rear driver's side. Previously I ran ham sticks mounted on an adjustable edge mount high on the edge of the rear door. That edge mount now serves a VHF/UHF antenna.

slim how'd that trip work out using the 2 CHAMELEON antennas set up at the base? Can you give us any feedback good or bad?

Just saw the brand on eham and they got some good reviews, I was curious if they worked as described.

Yeah, I would like to know as well.

On a related note, I recently bought a Buddipole system for a transportable HF antenna. It's not a mobile antenna for a truck, but it packs very small and the idea is to use it at night while camping/wheeling. Haven't received it yet so I can't say much about it but I'm looking forward to trying it out. The Buddipole comes with a small mast and tripod, but I have a receiver-mount / fiberglass pole setup that I may try to get it higher at camp.

Follow-up to my immediately-previous post in this thread: here is my Buddipole and FJC in action in remote far east Texas. I'm out on a gas well drilling rig near the Sabine River / Louisiana border in rural Panola County, Texas. Ordinarily you would deploy the Buddipole on the ground, but there is a lot of local machinery traffic on the well site so I put it up on top of my Gobi roof rack. Gives it more height too obviously. The relatively flat mesh floor of the Gobi is the perfect width for the Buddipole tripod. Here it is today on the FJ, configured as a 17-meter vertical dipole:

I made several contacts with it this afternoon, including Florida and Arizona. I heard a guy in England clear as day, but couldn't get through the pile-up with my 100-watt Kenwood TS-480SAT mobile HF radio.

I have a spare set of coil clips on it so I can switch to 40 meters quickly just by changing the banana pins on the coils. The cool thing about the Buddipole is that it is a kit that can configured for any band from 2m through 40m, and with a few extra parts up through 160m, and in many different configurations - dipoles, verticals, beams, etc. A lot of fun so far.

Wow! Great information on Mobile. While in Alaska and NW Canada I did some 20m and 40m work with ham sticks with fair to good results. But, a setup like 1911 has would have been awesome for north of the Arctic Circle work!

cheers and 73,
