I’ve been watching and waiting for Harrop Eaton of Australia to expand their presence in the US, and late last year discovered it had done so..and ECGS was selling/installing them! In fact, ECGS said they were a better fit for Toyota clamshells than the ARB air lockers. Since my regear to 4.56 was relatively recent I decided to do the installation locally, vs ordering a whole new regeared clamshell with eLocker preinstalled. That’s what I would’ve done if they had been available at the time. But I would have missed all that learning :grin Bottom line, if you’re regeared and want to install this eLocker it’s extremely doable if you have very specific instructions...which we did not :rofl::mecry:

The locker is BEAUTIFUL, and Santa was so sweet to bring it to me :x First part of install was removing the old ring gear from the OE carrier, then assembling and pressing the new carrier bearings (definitely better that reusing the old ones) on to the locker body. Koyo manufactures carrier bearings for Toyota in Japan and are also offered by ECGS.

Much more to follow....time to take a break and go play with the new locker :blueblob:

The more difficult phase of the install came with fitting the locker in the clamshell and demonstrating a good pattern of the ring and pinion gears meshing (the yellow grease).Here’s what happened, and how you can easily avoid the problem we had....

Using the Harrop installation guide, three small ridges inside the clamshell required grinding down. There was only a picture to follow...and ours looked just like their pic. Oh, we also had to figure out (with no info) where to drill a significant hole in the clamshell to run power to the electromagnet. Settled on the top side of the diff to prevent leaking. Right away it was clear the position of the locker/ring gear inside was not mating well with the pinion, so the long trial n error process of subtracting foil-thin shims (like large metal gaskets), checking the meshing pattern by closing it up, using a drill to turn the gears, open back up and check the pattern etc over and over for HOURS....and unable to get it right. Reached out to Rodney the amazing shop owner, and to Chase at ECGS. Rob, my brilliant mechanic/friend finally suggested maybe we needed to grind away more metal from the the interior spots after seeing wear marks appear from our attempts. I was getting quite nervous but said go for it - and boom just like that, using the stock shim, great fit and excellent pattern in the yellow grease. So the second pic showing the three places to grind away is the one to use of you’re doing this :thinkerg:

Closed up, bolted back in the FJ, and wired in the power for electomagnet and dash switch (I used an OE style one from Chitown4x4). Would’ve been straightforward but had to move switches around to make room. Cut into the console for my rear window actuator. Really wanted the front locker switch directly below the rear locker switch because I have muscle memory for the rear switch which I’ll use more often, plus the front locker switch will be a bit more protected from accidental deployment (its completely on demand).

My impression driving it - locker engages immediately, no click sound. Right away the steering changes, making it clear it wants to go straight ahead and fighting turns. Also disengages right away. I’ll be trying it out on a ledge area soon and post feedback :wink

Awesome write up! A front locker gonna make a world of difference. I have been very curious about the Eaton/Harrop lockers. Glad to hear it engages and disengages instantly. I would like to hear your feedback on how the locker reacts during a slight roll back when you do a hill start. Because i read online these would temporarily disengage during a roll back.

Should be no roll back with the Auto trans . I have read that also . Somethings you just have to take with a internet grain of salt . Since we all tend to 3 wheel when off road i believe a front locker is a huge asset . Slow and steady and she will crawl up anything she can get her nose over .

Just FWIW I've stalled my auto a couple times by rolling back a foot or two. I believe the same concept applies by entering reverse gear.

I've heard of that issue also, not sure if they've fixed it or if it only happened once it wears out.

FYI for this thread, I've been told by Harrop that they are identical in construction to the Eaton elocker more commonly sold to domestic vehicles. I believe they were only allowed to sell them in certain regions until a few years ago.

@Iconic_ My understanding about this eLocker is that Harrop partnered with a US company to make a locker for our Toyotas, and this is called the Terrain Tamer. I know when I called ECGS last winter to ask about it they said they’d been carrying/installing it for a few months with great results. If eLockers had been available in the US back when I was getting regeared I would have done it, so I know this is a pretty recent thing. For more info look at the Cruiser Brothers website.

I will make sure and do a roll back test when I get out there, hopefully in this upcoming week :wink I have heard conflicting info on it disengaging with rolling backwards, but doubt it’s an issue.

Nice write up and pics Deb. You're going to notice the difference on obstacles like that for sure!

I had ARB lockers F&R in my old 70 series. rarely used the front but it was a 'get out fo jail' card for sure when you needed it. So nice to know there is an electric option, I am not a fan of air lockers, fitted them as no alternative but really dislike them. Just be sure to carry front shafts... just in case.

Thanks Sarah, good to hear your review of both having a front locker, and the distaste for air lockers! I do have a spare cv axle I always carry....maybe I should bring 2? :thinkerg: Also carry 3 OE tie rods :rofl:
