Just installed a Garmin DriveSmart 55 GPS unit into my 2007 FJ. I purchased the truck used three yeas ago and it came with the OEM GPS unit installed. All I did was buy the same old GPS unit on eBay for $15. I gutted the electronics, sanded the curved face off flush, cut the mounting ball off from the Drive55 mount and glued/screwed into the new mount. The Garmin power cord was fished through and hardwired in. The GPS unit is easily removed for safe keeping and the new mount folds in just like the OEM unit. And the OEM unit retains 100% functionality. The OEM unit is no longer supported by Garmin and this was a nice alternative. The pictures show the mount installed before the carbon fiber cover is glued on and flat charcoal grey paint is applied. Works fantastic. At 5’8”, I can easily see over the GPS unit and catch the front of the Blue hood. The heigth and fit is perfect. The picture angle below does not depict my visual angle. Having your GPS reference right in front of you instead of having to look down and away at a cell phone or center console is a huge benefit.
Backup Camera - really easy. The shop I went to took a Compustar Momento C3 HD/Night Vision license plate camera, removed it from the rail, and mounted it inside the center of the rear wheel tire bracket. The power cord was fished through the top of the vinyl rear door cover, through the washer grommet, and hardwired in. My power head is a Pioneer unit. The setup works fantastic and for a total cost of $250, well worth it!!
