What's the consensus on purchasing from bigger eBay sellers on eBay selling genuine Toyota parts? Is something others feel is legit or is the fake market too hard to spot?

The entire rebuild kit is about the price of one bearing hub from Toyota parts website. Too good to be true?

There are some genuine parts for sale at places like that, but it can be very difficult to tell what's real and what's junk from just the ad. Make sure they have a good return policy.

In general, the less likely the part is to be in demand the more likely no counterfeiter has bothered to try and enter that market. The ones to stay away from are huge volume things like spark plugs, O2 sensors and also anything priced so far below OEM prices it seems too good to be true (unless a genuine garage sale scenario).

In your case, from the photo, they do seem to be actual Toyota parts. If when they arrive the markings all look sharp and clear, and the parts look just like your old ones then you are probably OK.

Except if you read the fine print the only parts that will come in OEM Toyota packaging will be the bearings themselves ... the other parts are "bought in bulk" and will NOT be in Toyota packaging, contrary to what's shown in the photos.

Granted, getting genuine Toyota OEM bearing assemblies is probably a higher priority than getting genuine Toyota seals & O-rings. Does "bought in bulk" mean it's EXACTLY the same seal as Toyota buys from a seal manufacturer, and then re-packages in a Toyota box? Maybe, maybe not ...

If you check out the seller's negative feedback, you'll find some complaints about Chinese parts in non-OEM packaging ... who's to know where the real source is? OEM parts in plain brown bags, or cheap aftermarket parts in plain brown bags?

In the eBay link, look at the Toyota boxes for the bearings, and the Toyota labels on the bagged items ... they all look 'used'. I've heard of scammers digging through the trash behind larger Toyota dealerships, and salvaging Toyota parts boxes. Then, run over to the local parts store, buy a cheap import part, drop in in the Toyota box, and PRESTO! you have something to sell on eBay.

Thanks Norm. Good to know and makes sense.

FJtest- I did notice the somewhat used look and the bulk small items. It's the overall 33K feedback that caught my eye and had me thinking it's not a one off and someone may have dealt with this seller before.

I'm far enough ahead of my work where I would consider ordering this listing and from a direct source, comparing and returning one. That is to say, assuming the knock offs are detectable when comparing...

Everything I've purchased from there - including the windshield molding just this past week - has been legit. Check the reviews from the seller and go from there. The parts I've been buying have been coming from the UAE and Japan, so I feel pretty good about getting legit pieces since the FJ was still in production overseas until recently.

To update, I came across an app that is sponsored by the world bearing association to validate the authenticity of bearings for leading international manufacturers such as JTEKT (Koyo), NACHI, NTN, NSK, Schaeffler (INA/***), SKF, and Timken.

It can be found here: https://www.stopfakebearings.com/

In short, a serialized code on the product package is used which is different for each item. The code can be a GS1 Datamatrix or QR code. By scanning in the WBA app, it can determine if it's genuine, and allows direct reporting of counterfeit items and dealers.
