Hey everyone new to the forum but have definitely done HOURS of research already on here! So I recently just purchased an 08 FJ manual transmission 4x4 with 72K miles on it. As soon as I got back into town I took to the local toyota dealer to get it inspected.. of course they charge me for 2 hours $200. Right off the bat had some issues... CV axle leaking, E brake needed adjustment, and a noise only when pressing the clutch. Yes I know about the TOB BS and everything that goes along with that. When purchasing we were told it had a brand new clutch in it... well it didn't after noticing a noise when pressing the pedal we knew something was off. Brought it back had them put a new clutch and flywheel ( whoever drove this vehicle was a dumba** and burnt the clutch and flywheel horribly) and now there's this ANNOYING ticking noise coming from that area when the clutch is not pressed. But the noise stops with just the slightest pressure on the clutch... took it back to the mechanic ( two hour drive every time so the work is free ) he lifts it up and we see that its kinda wobbling on there and the TOB is not sitting on the pressure plate completely and making that noise as a result. The mechanic gets the idea of installing a spring on there to hold the tension and hopefully help the new clutch get seated right on the TOB, he says they used to put these on the old 4x4 for off roading.. it was working but needs to keep being adjusted to stop the noise. I'm not really sure what else I can do for this? I'm not having ANY issues whatsoever when driving and shifting, it's as smooth as butter, but that damn noise is driving me up the wall!

Other than that I absolutely love this vehicle! Cannot wait to put a suspension lift on it, still can't decide on 3" or 6" but definitely want 35s probably a BMC, new front bumper with skid plate was thinking the expedition one trail series diamond or n fab with light bar, trail gear rock sliders, new upper and lower control arms and new headlights and grill. Oh and also the sub has a hole in it and I didn't notice when buying so gotta do some audio upgrades!
Hopefully I can have this all ready to go for the Toyota appalachian round up in September

Welcome from Tennessee , Seems like something is amiss with the TO bearing. There is a sleeve you can get to go over the output shaft housing and may help. However you have to pull the tranny to do it.

If I were you, I'd stay away from the dealer, and find yourself a good independent shop.

When I was in Dunedin, I used the Toy House in Tampa for stuff I didn't want to deal with.

My cousin uses Running Great Auto, also in Tampa.

Welcome from the UK.

I'd agree with the advice to steer clear of dealers, they'll always give you a list of things they need to fix urgently because it's too dangerous to drive home... actually that should probably say replace as dealers don't fix things...

Hope you get it sorted out, sounds like you've got grand plans for the future.

Definitely sounds like TOB chatter, look into a kit like this one from URD:

Underdog Racing Development

I would also look into an independent shop for the install - it won't be cheap, but it's the only way to fix it right!

Another welcome from Georgia and fellow 6MT owner. I got a killer deal on my 07 because it had a bad clutch. I installed the URD stage 2 clutch with the PDM sleeve and installed a new LUK flywheel. Unfortunately, I think I may have done some premature damage wheeling last weekend as I am getting a little shudder taking off. Was smooth as butter until last weekend's adventures...
