Just wanted to mention as I didn't see it here & there is a lot of misinformation / confusion out there:

ALL iPhones (at least since 3GS, possibly before) have built in Assisted GPS chipsets. That means that *in addition* to having a FULL GPS chip, it can also use mobile towers to triangulate in urban settings - where GPS's usually fail.

iPads with Cellular also have this same chipset. Wifi only iPads do not :(

The only bad thing (if you consider that) is you have to download the data before going offline or out of cell range:

I've used a couple apps which feature offline storage & is by no means an exhaustive list):

Topo Maps:

Topo Maps for iPad (same author):

Off line topographical maps. Pretty easy to use & quite functional. Will also overlay map sections & lines them up pretty good

MotionX GPS

MotionX GPS HD for iPad:

You can select from a few different map types: MotionX Terrain or Roads; BING maps; NOAA Marine Maps.

You can offline-download sections of MotionX Terrain or Roads or NOAA.

I was pleasantly surprised to see Waiprous trail maps all detailed in the MotionX Roads maps :) I haven't been everywhere but have yet to find a trail not detailed !

I will download from Zoom level 1 to about 16 as it translates to ~ 30 square KM's for about 350 MB. There are additional zoom levels but I dont see the need as space rapidly goes up per additional zoom level after that.

In addition you can save your tracks & set as many waypoints as you would like. Exporting is easily done to GPX files - industry standard - and viewed in Google Earth and etc.

So for $0.99 or $1.99 you can skip the standalone device and use what you may already have!

Just passing it along - there may be better apps out there but for me MotionX GPS rocks!

Holy resurrection ...!

MotionX GPS has continued to work great for me. Just remember to download the maps the night before and you're set.
