I will buy my FJ at the end of this year (I currently own a Rubicon, which I have never done any off roading with).

I will do a little off roading, nothing hard core. I want to add a lift to it.

I know absolutely nothing in regards to doing this (of course will have installed by a pro).

My question is, if I am not going to be doing alot of off roading, and just want a basic lift, what is the best height to go with (something like a 3 inch lift?

Also, do you do a body lift as well? If so, something like a 1 inch body lift to that?

If I do something like what I mentioned (basically the minimum lift), what size tires would be recommended (I will most likely street ride as well, and go with something like a BF Goodrich All Terrain). Also, does rim size matter (when buying vehicle, do I go with 16 or 17 inch).

If there is also a sticky that answers most of my questions, please feel free to point me in that direction.

That's what we're all here for, support. There is a complete lift comparison thread under the suspension section. Three inches of suspension lift will do you good on the stock 17" rims with some good AT/MT tires and you'll be in business. There are a million different lift/tire combos plus all the other goodies available for the FJ. Good luck on your future purchase and welcome to the forum!

There are several brands to choose from so check out the Suspension forum. There are even pics of the different types. Personally, I went with the OME 3" lift for my truck and love it!

Also, do you do a body lift as well? If so, something like a 1 inch body lift to that? I did not do a body lift, just the OME. Here again, check out the suspension forum and there are gurus there that could answer your question.

I went with the Bridgestone Dueler AT Revos but there are lots of options. Check out the wheel and tire forum for a pretty extensive sticky that shows loads of different tires.

If there is also a sticky that answers most of my questions, please feel free to point me in that direction.

I am in Huntersville, about 20 miles north of Charlotte.

LOL, we get all the Nascar traffic on the way to the races:mecry: (I hate Nascar).

We have lived here since 2004 (prior locations Ohio and Vermont).

I was looking around the forum and came across your questions. Out of "curiosity", why are you going from a Jeep Rubicon to a FJ? :cheers:

A good lift for some light offroading on weekends or here and there i think is the Rough Country 3 inch lift. it's around $300.00 bucks. i have it on my truck.
But if your really going to get into offroading i would suggest a full kit like the OME 3 inch kits are a good work horse kit at around $700.00 bucks

I'll tell you what, I'm much like yourself(mild off-roader). I got a Toytec 3" spacer lift & am running 285/70r17 BFG A/T & I love the look of the truck now more than ever. Toytec said I could go as far as 295's. I've got about 3000 miles on the lift & tires & love the way other FJ's look at me when I pass them,(only lifted FJ around here) They give the FJ owners wave(kind of like a biker's wave when they pass one another) & then they notice my just looks a little tougher. The 3" is not huge by any means, just enough.

I went with a 3" lift and it is great, as for the body lift, I'm not a big fan of them I would definitly go with the suspension lift. I had a 95 Wrangler that had a body lift, I took it aff and added a suspension lift, it made a big dofference with the look, ride. Just my personal 2 cents

In regards to the Rubicon, I loved it, however I needed more space for my dogs, plus I always wanted a FJ (new and old).

I loved the Rubicon, got a great deal on it brand new (friend worked at dealership, was on phone with me, helping me get deal, work out price while I live in another state).

I also got Law enforcement discount, along with rebate going on at time.

I had no probs with it. I also wanted a diff ride, and I am totally loving my new FJ:rocker:

check out the Rough Country 3in, its not to pricey and from what Ive read on the forum it seems that most who have it really like it. plus its not supposed to be hard to install.

The cheapest 3" lift would be the lift spacer, although it wouldn't give you the best performance as it requires use of the stock C/Os. If you want to spend a little more$$$ then go with something like the Icon COs.:bigthumb:

As far as tire size, the biggest tire would be a 33" tire w/o having to do a B-mount chop.:cheers:

Hi Jack, I am glad that you are enjoying your FJ! I have the EZ Lift 2/12" Spacer lift on the front and I run 285/70/17 BFG A/T KOs and I couldn't be happier for the price. The spacers were only about $120 shipped and it allowed me to clear the larger tires that help so much when wheeling lightly or a little more hardcore. It all depends how much you are willing to spend and what are your preferences. I would not suggest a body lift with a suspension lift because it puts a lot more stress on your frame which can result in twisting your frame if you're not careful. Good luck with your modding!
