My FJ didn’t come with one. I like the OEM rack bc it doesn’t cover the entire roof. Do people upgrade bc the OEM just isn’t feasible? Is it garbage? If so is their an aftermarket rack that’s better, but doesn’t Cover the entire roof?

Some people make the OEM rack work but it doesnt work very well with many things. Can be hard to attach items, etc. If you want the OEM look but not much functionality, then go for the OEM.

When I bought my FJ new in Nov 2009 I elected not to spend $629 for the factory roof rack because it was already getting trashed as useless on this forum. I ended up buying a Prinsu rack for about the same price (they were cheaper then and I got during a group buy).

Havent seen a 3/4 or 1/2 aftermarket roof rack, but doesnt mean one doesnt exist. There is a whole sticky on roof racks. I suggest you read through it as a starting point. Also, try to evaluate what exactly you are planning to carry up there and how it will attach. Also, some racks are more for a DIY sort of person that others (e.g. Prinsu vs. FrontRunner as only one example).

I just took my OEM rack off. You can have it if you are near Knoxville, TN. I assume by the goVOLS you might be? I have the hardware as well. Its not in new condition, has a few dings, but the price is right if you want to give it a try before spending money somewhere else. I listed it for sale locally last week, but I am happy to give it to a fellow forum member and Volunteer.. :grin

I'm in the DFW area. I'll be taking my OEM rack off soon, as I bought a warrior rack.
I wanted a sturdier low profile rack to be able to fit in the garage and to be able to hold equipment when and if I need to.

If you're close by here, mine is available for free also.
It's not off yet, but will soon be.

If you have a business address or shop that can receive your package, you can save some bucks. Chitown 4x4 shipped to my work and it was under $900 for the large flat rack. This was 2 years ago so prices have gone up but shouldn't be over $1k.

When I bought mine it was $700 and I drove down to Oceanside and picked it up myself. Then I had to sell it because of money problems. A few years later I was looking to buy another one and when I looked them up online they were up to about $900. Not even sure what shipping is I was going to go get it myself again :)
