Map Light And Scanguage Install

I picked up on Swissarmy's idea of installing an overhead light, but I also wanted to put my scanguage up there too. I just did't like any of the mounting locations I had seen, and I really liked the overhead trip computer on my previous vehicle. I bought an overhead map light/sunglass holder from ebay that came out of a Honda Accord. The scan guage fit in the sunglass holder, so I decided to cut out an opening to accommodate it. I glued some wood strips to the sungalss holder besides and above the scanguage to keep it in place. I installed a little aluminum tube through the back of the sunglass holder compartment to limit the angle when opened for optimum viewing. I routed the scanguage cable up the A pillar and above the headliner to the cutout. Swissarmy's measurments for the cutout were dead on - thanks Swiss. I wired the map lights to the dome light power. I've got extra lighting now if I need it. I can close the sunglass holder to put the scanguage up and out of the way if I need to. Overall, I've got to say I'm pleased with the results.

I'm sure we can work something out. I'm rather fond of good beer.
I am still out of the country, but will be back in a matter of weeks now. No promises but let me see if I can get some West African Beer home. Besides the map light and the scanguage is there anything else I need?
Questions:

How far away from the map light should this be placed? wesayso, I think you said yours is 5.250" from the mirror. iCruiser is much closer. Is it just personal preference? Any problems being close vs farther away?

Is iCruiser just "compression-ed" mounted? Wouldn't the map light "give" a bit when you push on it because there is nothing behind it? Or is the headliner that stiff?

In iCruiser diagram, does the wooden mount go front to back or side to side. Do all 4 screw go into the mount or only the front two or back two? Sorry, but the diagram is confusing to me. I don't know what the view point is.
Im trying help you for all the help you've given me....See post 396 and you will see how far back mine is, since you are doing a reverse mount because of the scanguage dont know for sure if this will help or not, but in that location there was no obstructions --- post 396: http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/foru.../83363-unique-mods-post-your-pix-here-40.html
Thanks Steve. Nice install of the console. :bigthumb: I'm still shaky about cutting that headliner.

Its just one of those things, just take your time and use a spanking brand new blade and it cuts sooooo easy, just go slow. I can tell by your previous posts its something you can easily do. It is a -adjust and check- mod after you have made your cut to get the headliner rest nicely against the OH console, I had to use foam tape in places but it turned out nice after a trial or two. Its very stout now.

When you first hear the blade cut the headliner you do cringe a tiny bit but then you're ok:bigthumb:

PS I save the cut out piece of the headliner just for fun, I think some one here said a new headliner is $1300 and when you look at it after you cut it out, I bet they make the headliner for about a $1.50
Thanks Steve. Nice install of the console. :bigthumb: I'm still shaky about cutting that headliner.
Make a template. Double check everything. Tape template in position, being sure it is oriented correctly. Use a fine tip marker to trace around the template. If you do all this correctly, cutting it out is the easiest part. As Stig pointed out, use a new razor.

Forgot to show you this earlier, http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/forums/interior-exterior-visual-tech/108827-sound-proofing-fj.html

Post #1, hit his link and check his pics, he's got a perfect pic of interior roof without the headliner so you can see whats where and whats what:bigthumb:
Thanks for the support guys. :bigthumb:

Getting ready to go camping this weekend, so mods will have to wait(except for the SS Pet/Cargo Barrier I just installed :))

Also, got in on the Tacoma World Aeroforce Intercepter group buy. Waiting on a quote for a dual setup. If it's only stupid expensive and not crazy expensive  I might go that route. Two of those in the dash pod would look sweet! :rocker:
:bump: because this is still the coolest Scangauge install ever! :bigthumb:

...and to let you guys know I chickened out and went with the 3 Intercepter gauges in the dash cluster option instead. I just couldn't cut my headliner.

BTW, if anyone is interested in doing this mod, my 'kit' is available in the 4Sell section.

Would like to see some pics of that.
I've got the three gauges installed in the pod. Still need to build a custom 3 way ODB2 cable and install the air and oil sensors. I'll post pics in another thread when finished.

Funny, I couldn't cut my headliner, but I had no problem tearing out the insides of my dash cluster and modifying it to fit the gauges.

Would like to see some pics of that.
Sorry I posted twice, look one post lower vvvvvvv
This is very interesting, but what would be the best option for mounting the maplight for someone who doesn't have the means for fabricating a mounting bracket? Is there a simpler way?
^^^Sorry, I just saw this.^^^ The mounting bracket is very simple. A good hobby store will stock narrow pieces of basswood, or marine plywood. just cut and glue.
For anyone interested, the map lamp from a Honda Accord without the sunroof works nicely in the FJ. You will have to remove the basic FJ lamp and bracket and enlarge the hole to match the Accord map lamp. I used a flat sheet of metal and a flat bar to fabricate a mounting plate and brackets. It turned out to be very nice. Feel free to ask for details and pictures.
