I am interested in adding the homelink and an overhead sun glasses holder.
But how would the maplamp work if the Honda/Acura overhead was to be positioned the right direction instead of backwards for the SG set up?
It just seem like it would be to far foward for the bulb lens to be affective as a maplight. Can you folk give me some feedback on this.

Also are you folks using all four screw holes to hold the console up to the roof/headliner?
Since mine has the homelink my console has three terminal. I am quessing the three terminals are power/gound/power. Middle being ground, Am I correct?
Just want to double check all info before surgery.

Turning the light assembly around shouldn't be a problem, but you could test it by hooking it up with jumper wires and placing it in the mounting area. Plus, there is nothing to prevent you from moving the whole assembly aft a few inches. I only used screws on the maplight end of the unit. The other end has the prongs that rest on top of the headliner. As far as wiring the light - just test it with jumper wires. You will not damage anything if you swap positive and ground because the assembly is not gounded to the vehicle. Hope this helps.

I have the one with the homelink in it.

(Top Wire) White/Blue Stripe = Light Power

(Middle Wire) Black/Blue Strip/Silver dots = Homelink power (must be constant 12v)

(Bottom Wire) Black/Silver dots = Ground

The other issue you need to remember is the homelink requires constant power to keep the programming. And no it won't kill your battery, it draws a just few milliamps, it would take a few months to drain a standard car battery.

It will not matter which way you mount the assembly. It is an omni-directional RF transmitter not a beam of light

I just made a quick measurement. From tha aft end of the rearview mirror mount to the front edge of my cut out is 5.250". Good luck. Post pics when you finish.

One more question, from your observations, is this the best distance? can one put it a bit closer? Is there clearance in the headliner for some adjustments?

You could probably go a little farther forward. Cut the hole under size enough to take measurements inside.

OK, Finally made the cuts! using a drill and a dremel with a cutting blade (more like melted the plastic, not cut it!)

When I was bidding on this console on ebay I didn't pay attention to the color. I think everyone was getting grey, I bought the tan. A bit too yellow/brown for me so I spray painted it a Military Grey.

Turned out pretty nice, and a nice match with the FJ's interior.

So installation is this weekend, Labor Day weekend if I can get away from the family for a bit.

OK, finally started this project this morning!

Did the cutout and played with the location

Finally decided on a place, approx 3.25 in from the rear edge of the RearView Mirror mount. Cut a pilot hole to see what type of clearance I had up front (had enough space).

Boy this was the scariest part! Cut the hole!

Console fit a bit snug, did some edge shaving to get it in.

Now I need to address this bit of a gap between the headliner and the console. May use Wesayso's solution.

Gotta go pick up the kids from school, and will proceed after that!

I need to wire it up!

Middle is ground if I remember correctly. Easy enough to id the others with a test light or meter.

note the markings I put on the light wire and note the orientation of the light
black = constant power (this will go to the new map lights)
blue = ground (this will go to the new light ground)
red = "door" power (this will go to the new front center "door" light

I can't remember but it looks like the outer in Swiss's photo. Easy enough to check with VOM or test light.

Finally finished all the wiring for the install.

Instead of connecting directly to the dome light, I opted to run the wiring down the A-Pillar. Though my console also has Homelink, it only had two wires not three, so I decided to connect to the fusebox via a add-a-circuit.

Didn't have to worry about disturbing the airbags.

Here's my completed installation!
Now I gotta go figure out how to program the Homelink!

Well i purchased the gray version of this and a scangauge. Hopefully it will fit up there. My fingers are crossed.:bananahump-slvrathl

The main concern is how deep the console is. There is about 1.75" of space between the headliner and the roof until you come to the crossbeam which is approx 12-14 " from the rear view mirror.

from the pictures i have seen this console isn't deep at all. it mainly sits on the headliner. I'm sure minor trimming will be necessary.
