The RAD-1 (Rollover Avoidance Device) is a precise Digital Inclinometer that features user-programmable maximum safe angles and a progressive warning tone (like a backup warning). The display shows X (Pitch) and Y (Roll) angles and stores max values, but it's the audio warning that really makes it useful. You'll quickly find that this meter is mandatory for every off road adventure.

YouTube - RAD-1 in Holy Jim

Features:

Each character display shows a range from 0 degrees up to a maximum of 60 degrees for both X and Y axes’. The RAD-1 features a progressive audio alert indicating the unit is approaching a maximum angle which has been preset by user, and is factory preprogrammed to begin audio alert beep sequence when unit is tilted at angle 14 degrees less than user programmed set point. For example, if user sets 35 degrees as maximum angle then the RAD-1 starts beeping at 21 degrees. Beeping becomes progressively faster as final set point is approached according to the following sequence:

21 degrees, beeper starts @ 1 second intervals
24 degrees, beeper increases rate to 1/2 second intervals
27 degrees, beeper increases rate to 1/4 sec intervals
30 degrees, beeper becomes steady tone
The 14 degree range is factory set and whatever final degree set point the user chooses the beep sequence begins 14 degrees prior and then becomes a steady tone 5 degrees prior to that point.

In addition to the steady audio alert that begins when the angle is within 5 degrees of the user set point, each display also begins to flash when this same angle point is met for each axis.

Volume Control

Volume is controlled by hitting the left (X Axis ) button. The display will then show “Vo” and volume can be changed by pressing the right (Y Axis) button.

Maximum Safe Angle Values

Maximum safe angle values can be uer-programmed by user through front-panel mounted push buttons.

Maximum Angle Recall

Maximum angle measured during operation can be recalled and displayed. This is very useful in learning your rig, especially how it behaves in compound angle situations. Excellent tool for both beginners and experts for learning the behavior of your rig and provide accurate data to support what you already believe.

Display brightness

Display brightness can be adjusted via the front panel buttons.

Power

Power can be turned off by holding the right button for 2 seconds. Power can be turned on by pressing the right button briefly.

Vehicle mounting

The RAD-1 ships with strong Velcro for dash mounting. An optional window-mount suction cup accessory can be purchased separately to provide additional mounting options.

The RAD-1 ($179) comes complete with the unit, manual, cigarette-power adapter, and mounting.

Notes: The RAD-1 has no serial capability, nor can it log data for viewing and/or comparing with LogWorks. Although "RAD" is an acronym for "Rollover Avoidance Device," this product will in no way intervene and prevent a rollover. It may warn you when you approach extreme or potentially unsafe angles, however, every vehicle is different, as are the terrain, environment and the driver. No device can do more than give a visual and audible warning in regard to angles. Safe driving is up to you, the driver. This device is a tool and a gauge, like any useful meter.

Wow, I would find all that beeping really freaking annoying. Kinda like a mother-in-law in the back going "this is kinda steep, this is kinda steep"... "Oh, this is REALLY steep".. "Oh, look what you've done..."

Someone, please as usual correct me... but any rollover angle on a moving vehicle is quite variable. Big dynamic system here. Yes, for some of us "data junkies" it might be fun to see how far we were, etc.

Biggest thing would be to have an analog display (not the useless one on my FJ - which for pitch is completely worthless sense there is no centerline crosshair), digital produced analog would be fine, and easy to read if it updated in realtime.

--->Also, what advantage would this be over my two current meters??? 1) my spotter going "Nah, you're fine....", 2) my "poop" meter...

It's cool to see new equipment out there, the more, the better. But refinements on some are definitely ness before they are useful. The human brain can process an analog gauge much better. How many new vehicles have digital speedo's and tachs?

The idea with the audio is that you don't have to look at it to know you are getting close to the limit. The rate of beeps gives you a great indication and allows you to focus on what you are doing without having to take your eyes off of the obstical.
