I just received this e-mail from "Tread Lightly" about a volunteer opportunity next weekend at Ocala National Forest. You can bet I will be there, and I would love it if we could really show a large contingent of FJ Cruisers at this event, the Wheelers for the Wounded and at the Hard Rock.

Volunteers Needed for Project on Ocala NF
At a time when many off-road areas are closing from lack of funds, Tread Lightly! and HUMMER are helping open 81 miles of trails specifically for four wheel drive vehicle use in Florida, but we need help from volunteers!

The project is part of a Tread Lightly! program called HUMMER’s Recreation Rescue. Thanks to funding from HUMMER and the help from volunteers, the Ocala National Forest will be able to properly sign the area, install educational kiosks, and print new maps. This newly designated 81-mile route is called “Four Wheel Drive Way.”

The project will kick-off with a volunteer workday on Saturday, June 21 from 10AM to 3PM. Volunteers will be asked to dig post-holes and help install various signs along the route. The meeting place for the workday is at the intersection of SR40 and FR597 (also known as NF597) at 10:00AM. It’s a little under 10 miles west of SR19. We can provide lunch.

The workday will be held in conjunction with a special “Wheelers for the Wounded” event, which strives to provide weekends of off-roading and camping to the country's wounded military members. The HUMMER X Club will be hosting that event, which will happen on Saturday night and Sunday. If you would like to attend that event, which includes dinner on Saturday night and riding on Sunday at a local private park called The Hard Rock, please let us know ASAP.

Please bring work gloves. If you have a post hole digger, those would definitely come in handy.

If you are available to volunteer, let us know as soon as you can, thank you in advance!

Bump!! :bump:

Even though this is being marketed by Hummer, we should try and get as many rigs outthere as possible to show that FJC's care about local land issues and are reday to volunteer for work or to assist with Wheelers for the Wounded!

Kinda cool to see more members on here getting involved with the Wheelers for the Wounded.

Be nice to see more and there are a few states that still don't have a host such as: Georgia, Nevada, New Mexico and South Carolina.

If anyone is interested you can check out:
Wheelers for the Wounded - Index

Heck even if your state does have a host, it's not about what your driving, so I am sure any help would be appreciated if you wanted to get involved.

Well so far the only people who have committed is you and me. The Tread Lightly rep said we don't have to register or anything, just show up on time and ready to work. She would like us to inform her how many trucks will be attending though, so I was waiting for a solid count. We could meet at the fire tower about a mile east of the SR40 and FR597 intersection. That is where we've joined up before when going wheeling in ONF.

I've got family coming and they won't want to work. If anything, they'd just want to ride!

I'm out for this one... Let us know how it goes and take lots of pics.

Sounds like a plan. I've had my FJ for a year now and haven't been past Ft. Myers. I can't wait to get out of town for a couple of days. Sounds like it should be fun. Good causes. I used to go wheelin' in my mighty montero when i was stationed in wyoming. It'll be nice to take the vets for a ride and give back for all they have givin for us.

I have informed Monica at Tread Lightly that 2 FJC's will be there for the sign posting volunteer efforts. I will not be able to attend the Sunday Wheelers for the Wounded event, but if anyone else wishes to do so then you can contact Monica ( Monica Clay <[email protected]> ) or try and contact Hummer X Club or WftW directly.

I will be at the fire tower on SR-40 by 9:30 AM.

It was really nice. The jeep clubs had a big turn out. They were from Orlando and Broward and a few others. Only two Hummers were there. Then the two FJ's. I was a wuss and stayed on the main road. I'm not ready for pinstripes yet.(flame away:flamed:) I'll try and up load some pics. All and all it seemed like a really nice event. About an hour or so into it it rained BIG TIME. That's when I left. Didn't want to play in wet sugar sand with a stock FJ.

Sorry for not replying earlier, it's been a really busy week for me. Thank you Paul for posting that pic and the link to FL4WDA site, I had no idea it had been put up there! There are multiple images and files with all the GPS coordinates at FL4WDA Discussion Forum - ONF Trail Mapping Data as well.

We had a blast, about 65 Jeeps, 2 FJC's, 1 Tacoma and 2 Hummers showed up.

As you see in the various pics of the day, there were large wooden signs for the bigger trails (surfit did some of these) and smaller carbonite signs for the smaller "loops" which I did with 3 JK's from Orlando and the JK Forum.

The trail I worked on - Loop 3 - was very tight and had lots of twisting turns and quite a few mud puddles after the heavy rains we received in the afternoon. I was in back with all the carbonite posts and my post hole digger in the Coyote, following the 3 JK's, one of which had his GPS. When we got a little confused and turned off in the wrong direction, we all turned around and I ended up in the front. The Jeepers were pretty surprised I think, because I was happy to punch through brush that they were leery of, but they followed right along. In the heaviest sections one of the JK drivers let his passenger drive while he ran ahead of us on foot with a machete, hacking back the thicker brush. I give him major rep's for running along an unknown trail, in a major lightning thunderstorm, waving a 2 foot metal blade around in the air! :rocker: He was so soaked and filthy it was quite a sight.

We kept it up though, despite all the rain and lightning, and got all the signs we were assigned posted.

I am going to be contacting Jason at FL4WDA and volunteering to mark another trail that wasn't ready yet. I really want to check this one out, it is in the south-eastern quadrant and goes around Baptist Lake and then out into Pittman Swamp and back to the main trail. If anyone wants to go along contact me and I'll put together a day run.

Well it appears Jason has gotten a jump on me with respect to the Baptist Lake area:
FL4WDA Discussion Forum - Baptist Lake (and Blue Sink)

I'd like to get a group of FJC's from the Central Florida area together to work on some of the trail marking and possibly putting up posts to keep people on the trail and for the parking area around Blue Sink. I'll keep everyone posted and start a new thread when there is anything concrete.
