I am looking for a program to map and track where I have been while off-road and out of cell coverage. I am using an app called "My Tracks" now and it works fairly well for me. It has all the maps Google provides. It records files that can be uploaded to Google Earth. While off line or out of cell coverage it just goes blank.
What programs are any of you using. I would like to mount a tablet and use an external GPS sensor on the roof. Maps that are detailed and available off-line are a must or I will just keep using the My Tracks app.
Thanks for any ideas!

I use sygic.
It's ok. I bought it while it was on sale. Works off line. Uses TOM TOM maps. Not sure how well it would do off the beaten track.

I used to use My Tracks but now I use the Viewranger app instead. The offroad and trail maps are really complete and you can download your entire area before you leave so you can use it on the trail. It is a $15 app but it's awesome and worth it. Never leave home without it!

I've been looking for a GPS app that works without network data as well. I don't understand why Google maps can find my location where ever I am without any issues, but it won't give me directions unless it has a network signal. That's something they should really work on.

Im trying the free versions right now of backcountry and view ranger. View ranger uses bing maps..... not sure how I feel about that but we'll see.

Another possibility is PDF Maps (Avenza PDF Maps | Get the app. Get the map.®). It has a map store where you can purchase all kinds of different maps. It also will let you import any PDF based map with geotagging for use. The US Forest Service has many free maps you can download and use. Many of their Motor Vehicle Use maps have been geotagged. Also, the USGS has an online store where there are free topo maps for just about all of the US available (for free).

has anyone used an app called US Topo Maps? The record feature seems pretty accurate and the map databas is USGS so its all about real cartography to navigate with. Curios if its worth the money.

And those who have used EveryTrail; is there a way to search by trail type? In other words I dont want to fish through 100 kayak trips and 1000 hikes, just wheeling journeys.

thamks in advance

I like using Maverick Pro, it lets you download maps, and it also lets you record where you go. I use this a lot off-road exploring on my motorcycle. I just turn on the record feature and go off through the woods and it records everywhere I go so I can see where I went, or go back to it in the future.

I recently picked up US Topo Maps and have been pretty happy with it. Tracks pretty accurate with altitude and you can choose from and download a huge selection of different maps.
