OK - I am stumped- Driving Light wiring

1081 Views 18 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  doublejfj
I have installed several sets of driving lights over the years, but this one has me going:mecry:.

All of the grounds are good. I have power from the battery to relay #30. Got # 86 going to the switch (middle). Number 85 to ground. Mini tap from inside fuse box to switch (got power there). Have a good ground for the switch. I get no power from # 87 (to the lights).

So - why no power to the lights.

I connected the lights up directly from the battery - they work.

I have checked everything several times. No Luck.

Hmm - you got me there. The mini tap (hot) goes to the switch. One of the points on the switch is a ground.

Not sure how to ground the mini tap. I just plugs into the fuse box - and has it's own fuse.
The minitap I installed (NAPA) also had two fuse slots. I didn't work until I installed both a 10 and 7.5 fuse in the tap. Also check the minifuse for power. Might be defective or blown fuse during installation
No grounding needed on the mini add-a-circuit. Sounds like a bad switch maybe? Try taking your 86 wire and applying +12V and see if the relay fires. If the relay fires, you can work back through your switch (check continuity through the switch terminals) and then your mini add-a-circuit tap.

I'll subscribe to your thread and help you along...
Good idea, but I checked it and I do have power to the switch. Not sure of how many volts - my meter is down - just using a test light. Showld be 12V though if I am getting power.
Steve and doublejfj : thanks for the responses!

Doublejfj - I tried a different switch - no help. I have not tried applying 12V to the 86 wire. I will do so tomorrow.

Check all the connections on the relay. Power (verify at the relay with test light) as well as GND (using the test light in the opposite sense, applying 12V to it and grounding it on the 85 terminal) and the feed.

Sounds like you've eliminated your switch, I wouldn't put it past a bad relay or bad connection somewhere.

I'll keep an eye out for you, let us know how it goes!

OK. Will do. I also ran a seperate hot wire for additional 12V outlets. I may pull power off that wire, rather than the mini-tap.

Going out of town tomorrow. May be Sunday before I can get back to the lights.
Thanks again!
Mike
Well, I decided to give it another try this morning before I leave.
I put direct power to the 86 wire - nothing. I checked all the connections and replaced some connectors that might have been a little loose. I have power to the switch - power to the relay - but no power to the 30 wire. I wired my switch : ground top/load (86) center/hot to botton.

I also tried a new relay. Checked the lights again with direct power - worked.
Got to jump in the shower , then head out of town.

I will check for suggestions when I get back.
Thanks
Mike
You said you've got no power to the 30? That means you've got a supply issue. 30 connects to 87 when 85/86 are a circuit. Check your supply line going into 30 from the battery and make sure it's good.
My error. I have no power to 87. I do have power to 30. That is what is driving me nuts. Everything seems ok, but when I flip the switch - no power to 87.

The inside switch ground is a frame ground. I know it is good, because my accessory plug uses it - an it works. Should I be using a wire ground (tapping into part of the oem electrics)?

Decided to eat lunch before I go leave, so I will be around a little longer.
Your ground sounds OK. Try disconnecting your switch and applying 12V with a jumper directly to 86?
Yes I did try direct to 86. Nothing.

I am thinking I will start over again with new wire and solder the connections when I get home.

If everything is connected properly - the grounds are solid - the rely is good and the switch is good - the lights work when connected direct, then it must be in the connectors or the wire. Correct?

By the way - I am wiring direct from the battery instead of getting power from the high beam headlights.
Connectors, wire, or the relay itself. That's pretty much it, as far as I can see. It's definitely one of those three...
OK. Thanks. I will let you know how it turns out the first of next week. I am out of here.
doublejfj - success!:clap:I changed a couple of the wires and soldered the connections. Lights work just fine. Never was able to pin point the problem, but that's OK as long as they work. Also installed a double accessory plug at the same time.

Thank you for your assistance.

 Glad I could help.
