Anybody have this thin film peeling issue on top of paint in pictures below?
If so, how did you fix it? Any recommendations? It just started about a month ago and is progressing quickly.

What's the accident history for the vehicle?

It looks like very poorly applied clearcoat that was applied after repaint from a front-end collision. If you look closely you should see other signs of collision repair and re-paint.

OEM Toyota clearcoat does not fail like that, it slowly goes 'chalky' after many years of sun exposure.

Thanks for your reply....
It never has been in an “accident”. However, it was repainted after a Texas hail storm damage in 2012.
So, just take it to a body shop and get a quote I guess? Do they do small jobs like that?
Any ideas on what my nest move should be would be appreciated.

They'll do it, they like money.

It's an easy job for them.

BTW... it’s not the whole hood. It’s only that spot above the faux air intake. The picture is deceiving as the shadows/reflecations make it worse than what it really is.....

This could totally be unrelated, but I've noticed a disproportionate amount of green, and blue colored vehicles with what I call "paint cancer", in which I believe the sunlight affects automotive paint of those colors. You'll see it mostly on the hoods and roofs of these cars, and see it spread over time. I don't know the scientific explanation (maybe the color in the wavelength is most affected by sunlight?), but I've avoided blue and green cars for this reason alone. Perhaps this is the start of paint cancer? Anyone else besides me notice this?

Mine is doing the same thing. Only the clear coat on the plastic trim across the front. The rest of the hood and body is fine.

It appears to be missing the seal in between the steel hood and forward section. #76183

Buy a new painted section, add the seal and new clips. No down time in the shop and probably cheaper too.

Three options:
1. Take it to a body shop and have them sand ALL the paint off, prime, re-paint, then finally clear-coat. A real PITA because of the complex shape, and the fact that its plastic.
2. You sand all the paint off, and take it to a body shop for repainting.
3. Buy a new pre-painted 'hood bulge' (or "air inlet grill") from Toyota.

In any case, paint color match might not be perfect.

Hannibal, thanks much for your reply. A few Q’s for you.....
1. How hard is it to change out that piece by myself? (I’m somewhat handy as I’ve done my own brake jobs and changed out both front wheel bearing assys.) Never done a body part like this though.
2. What do you mean by “seal”?
Thanks, again,

It unbolts from underneath and there several blue plastic clips as well. You can see those clips at the bottom of the Parts page. How many exactly, I do not know. Maybe someone else does?

Ray @ PUREFJ did a write up on removal of the front portion and installation of a light bar into the faux scoop area with extensive pictures. 20150129 183513

The $3 rubber "seal" goes in between the steel hood and this plastic "air inlet grille".

I just replaced the hood bulge assembly on my 2007 FJ Due to badly peeling paint. The replacement hood bulge assembly was complete, came fully assembled with the necessary clips already installed. The only part I re-used were the (x10) nuts that go back on the preinstalled screws.

My paint failure was worse than apreston1's. The paint also fell off the bulge assbly, down to the plastic. I live So Cal and the FJ did sit for four years out in the sun. I also had failure clearcoat like KAO, but up on hood near the wiper assembly cover and on the cover where antenna sits. I had paint and clearcoat for matching the mirrors and door handles to the body. Sprayed the color and clearcoat on the bulge and lightly sanded and clear coated the hood. Not perfect but unnoticeable with body that's desert pinstriped 🌵. Since KAO's color coat is still in good shape a light sand and clear coat from a rattle can will likely fix the clear coat failure. Just be aware that the color coat is much softer than the clear coat. I purchased the color and clear at www.automotivetouchup.com. The color was a perfect match😊. Their auto paint is acrylic lacquer so sprays easily, dry's fast, sands and polishes well.

I have an 07 Voodoo with the same problem. Another two FJ's I travel with, one blue and another yellow had the same problem. My neighbors dark blue 09 Tacoma was just repainted same problem. Another friend had to repaint their silver Corolla same problem. In all cases it's the clear coat that peels. This is not an FJ problem but a Toyota problem. I saw somewhere where people were trying to get a class action suit against Toyota for this exact problem.

I'm planning on have a body shop paint all the effected pieces a flat gray, no clear coat

Bad, you’re the BEST! Great info and pictures.
Thank you so much!
