I had the same thing happen on the trial. The exhaust become noticablly louder. When looking underneath I noticed the tailpipe making contact with the insulation under the floor. I pulled down a little and it popped back into place. What had happened is one of the rubber exhaust hanger grommets had flipped upside down causing the exhaust to hang higher up towards the floor. When this flipped back down everything fell back into place and the sound was back to normal.

Well... I'm wearing work clothes, so I couldn't really get under the truck, but did pop a squat, and the tailpipe is indeed touching the insulation. It looks exactly like your picture (except more mud and a dent in the pipe instead of the muffler).

So, I'm hoping that's all it is! After work I'll change and roll under there and see if I can't get it back into place.

Thanks, Flying Brick!

No problem. My tailpipe was also bent at the exit but I had bent it back with a floor jack handle prior to the pic. When you look at the hanger you will see the oval shapped rubber hanger and at first glance it will look normal but it may be rotated upside down. The one on mine that was rotated if I remember correctly was the one just in front of the muffler looking towards the front of the FJ. I took a little bit of force pulling down on the tailpipe then the hanger just flipped back into position and there will be several inches of gap between the tailpipe and insulation as normal.

FIXED!

Brick hit the nail on the head - 12 seconds under there, a pull and twist, and the rubber hanger rolled right over. There's now a good gap between the pipe and the top there, and it sounds completely normal.

12 seconds, $0.00 and peace of mind. :bigthumb:

Thanks, guys!

BTW - if you're ever in the DC area, I'll buy you a beer!
Glad your back in action!:)
