It's not a mass produceable vehicle (over a ~thousand vehicles/year). 30 year old technology. no crumple zones. no air bags. Yeah Prat wants it that way but the TLC version of the "modern" FJ-40 Prat-mobile will cost you $90K. one off, hand builts. Be thankful for the awesome vehicle Toyota is about to deliver for under $30K...and over $20K.
The other reason is back in 80's the American Car maufactures got congress to pass a tarriff on all 2 door suv's of 25% of selling price. Which made ahything Toyota and friends uncompeditive. Now Bronco II's sold as many they did and Jeep Wrangler never really had compatition.
