Raptor ECU Flash

G'Day,
As stated in the general thread...what did I do To my FJ....

fitted a Raptor Engine and Transmission ECU flash to Bozo yesterday.

Coupla extra bits of info to try to centralise info.

1. This ECU flash has been developed DU by Raptor, for the Dual VVTI 1GR engine, for the plus 2010 models.

2. No affiliation with Raptor, just a happy customer.

3. 4 tunes available.
stage 1 - stock FJ running 91 RON gas
stage 2 - modified FJ running 91 RON gas - mods to airbox and exhaust
stage 3 - stock FJ running 95 RON gas
stage 4 - modified FJ running 95 RON gas - mods to airbox and exhaust

DU, we have 3 levels of fuel
standard ULP = 91 ron
Super ULP = 95 ron
Premium ULP = 98 ron
Not sure what or how that relates to US gas.... ( we also have ethanol blends etc)

4. Measurements are in kw HP, not BHP.

5. Test and development FJ was a 2011 bone stock AT.

6. 1 method are offered by Raptor to obtain the flash....
buy the Powergate 3, pull your stock DAT file off the ECU, send it to them via email, they will modify the file and send it back to you with flash... upload this to your ECU ...done .... you have the ability to switch back to stock at your will as you have two DAT files, stock and modified.

7. The modified DAT is locked to your vehicle, as is the Powergate, so you cannot share it across other FJ's.

I'm not a dyno expert, and have no real knowledge how it all works .... but my butt o meter, tells me it works.
so if you have technical questions about AFR, roller size, type of Dyno used, etc..... you would be best emailing Raptor directly and speaking with Tim.

For those into Fakebook there is a large thingy page all about the 1GR called Toyota 1GRFE Club
Alot of info in there, apparently.

In the real world, after just one test drive, this flash ...absolutely rocks ... the power and performance increase and smooth gear shifts changes the FJ from a puddy tat into a Tiger.....
what I like is that this flash changes the transmission ECU parameters too.... so its matched to the engine enhancement.... the A750 is no longer lazy .... it really makes a huge difference to the A750......

Here is the dyno result from the Stage 3 flash, stock FJ and 95 ron.....

Cheers
Baz

4th October 2019 UPDATE
Since writing this thread in early April.
Raptor have simplified the available tunes.
Currently they offer
1. All Fuel Tune
2. Highest Octane - Racer performance tune - called the 98 Tune

Airbox mods are recommended with both tunes, but testing has shown exhaust mods do not seem to indicate any performance increase.

Cheers
Baz

I have 2” lift and run 265’s and most of my weight is low with skids, US off road bumper with winch and no roof rack. I run with AFE CAI w2” spacer, cat-back exhaust and Jmax snorkel

According to my ultragauge, I'm using about 1l/100km than I was before. I'm running the 98RON tune because I can.
If I'm driving sensibly, I can see some decent economy, but when I'm driving like I like to drive, I have seen some pretty terrifying numbers...
With great power comes reduced range.

+1 on the improved gas mileage. Went from about 18.5 to 19.5 on an otherwise stock 2010 with a roof rack.

My mileage has improved also but I run 4.88’s so there’s not much wiggle room.

I removed the tune to drive across to Moab and back, a noticeable drop in power and the cruise control sucked as it did before the tune. It was nice while in Moab to have the tune back in.

G'day,
with regard to cruise control...
Raptor advise doing a trans flush, or even a pan dump n fill will help .... as the ATF ages and wears... it can get heavier .... keeping the ATF fresh will reduce the instance of hard kick downs.
the cruise control has never been great in the FJ, trying to keep a brick at constant speed isn't easy... at the best of times... lol...

I had noticed less hard downshifting driving over the continental divide in July and this may explain it - I’d just had a full trans flush done 😊

Haven't been following this since I sold the FJ but any chance that the old tuner can be "un-bricked" yet? This thing is just sitting my basement collecting dust.

G'Day Mate,
As far as I know, nope ... its still a brick... I'd hazard a guess that only Alien Tech can unbrick it ...
but doubt they are willing too.

I just had the truck CA emissions tested with the PT loaded and 91 Octane PON. No issues! Passed as though it were stock. The computer has adapted to 91 PON and I'm really happy with the crazy torque boost when I get off in the sand. Certain fuels work better with the PT, Shell, Arco, Sinclair, or the SUNOCO 100 Octane at the black pump, but that's $7.00 per gallon and not really necessary unless I'm dune bashing.

Mine passed the emissions test second year in a row with 0% CO...
I'm pretty sure that the PT actually cleans the air.

@Beefbag

G'day Kris,
DM's only work after 5 posts, so you probably didn't get my reply... here it is

G'Day Kris,
thanks for the message.
Yes, the Raptor Tune is still available and still the best bang for buck... if you have an AT FJ.
Two ways to contact Tim @ Raptor ... here is his email address
[email protected]

or the website enquiry.. Contact Us | Raptor Superchargers

ITs summer vacation time here ...down under ... so he might be away ...but usually he is quick to respond.

cheers

Beware the Toyota Dealership! While replacing my air bags they re-flashed my computer. The tune felt a little light.

I re-flashed the computer back to 98RON and the back tires are spinning again! :) As the tune was being re-learned you could feel each step in +torque. I get best performance results by using a long hill, with traction control off, and progressively pushing the peddle to the floor to be at full throttle at mid hill.

@stephous Do you know if it was a different flash, update, from your original OEM flash? Did you save the new one they flashed? Just wondering but I suppose after all these years there is no new OEM flash..

Hey Lee44, They told me it was the original flash for my 2010 FJ, not an update. I didn't save it! When I got the FJ back I knew something was up. I ran for a whole day and wondered what had happened so I called Toyota.

I can't say too much until my legal case is over. I got rear ended in October 2020 and they wanted to total my FJ. Almost everything has been restored but this has been a real PIA. When the smoke clears I will let everyone know what happened.

For anyone who wants to find out what there High Octane tune can really do I highly recommend either VP race gas or their Octanium. They deliver 5 gallon pails to your front door...

Warning: It can be habit forming.
Hey I was wondering what Alientech replied back to you with. I’m having the same problem. I would really appreciate a response.

After some operator-induced errors, I successfully updated the Powergate (turn off all anti-virus/pop-up blocker; do not run Raptor Tune software from a zip file; copy program to a normal Word file; right click and "run as administrator").

I then hooked the PG up to the FJ's OBD and attempted to read the stock ECU file. No dice: "Calibration file not found. 335C3000." Per Tim's instructions, I reconnected the PG to my laptop, re-ran the Raptor Tune software, and clicked the “download LOG” tab on the left side of the screen. I saved this log file and emailed it to Tim. Apparently, the file will now be sent to Italy to Alientech for some kind of update, then I'll get further direction next week.

I ultimately got a refund and gave up on it. It was too complicated. I think they wanted me to take a photo of some code on my ECU...apparently some subsection of ECUs were not compatible with the PowerGate. I just got frustrated with the whole thing.
There haven't been too many posts lately but it sounds like most of us are still in love with our tunes. I got my AFT and PT in January of 2020, and they were both a shot of adrenaline for my DVVTi engine. A few people had bad experiences. Most had excellent experiences. I learned long ago that our V6 engines don't tune like V8 engines. It's easy to over do it and actually hurt performance. How? Big exhaust systems, the wrong intake, the wrong fuel, and other gimmicks. IMO the AFT works better on a FJ without mods and 91 Octane. The PT requires other changes if you really want to reap the benefits of more valve and ignition timing. I have both tunes but I'm running the PT. This discussion is not about the AFT. It's about the PT.

The first important point - If you aren't running 100 Octane or an Octane modifier the PT is not going to do much for you! You can get 100 Octane from a few gas stations in Orange County CA. Or you can use Octane Modifiers but you have to use the expensive ones, or at least Lucas with 91 pump gas. Read about Torco:
Torco Unleaded Accelerator

Here's a list of things that I tried that produced negative results:
Flowmaster Exhaust - Loud, 3" tubing, and no torque until 4500 RPM
TRD Intake - Louder and no torque until 3500 RPM, but lots of torque above 3500 RPM which would probably be OK with lower gears
Tail Pipe Resonator on Magnaflow exhaust- Louder, Lower Tone, and less torque below 3000 RPM
K&N Intake tube with stock air box - Less torque below 3000 RPM but BIG torque gains above 3000 RPM. I'm not sure how to rate this one, better for a manual transmission?
100 Octane but the wrong mods or no mods - Feels pretty much the same as 91 Octane unless the right mods are installed

Here's a list of things that I tried that produced noticeable results while running 100 Octane:
Stock Air Box with AFE high flow dry filter - Louder than stock but nice torque gains over the entire RPM range
Stock Toyota exhaust tubing 2.25", Magnalow muffler, tail pipe cut back 12" - Nice low RPM torque gains and moderate high RPM gains
NGK Iridium Spark Plugs gapped to .045 - Very noticeable gains all over, more throttle response, Denso plugs at 0.045" would probably feel similar.
100 Octane - Big gains with the right mods.

Next mod - Because of the throttle response I got with more plug gap and the PT I'm having 40KV coil packs made by DUI:
Toyota SOS Coils – Performance Distributors

So what, who cares, blah, blah, blah? If I can get time on the dyno at Performance Motorwerks I will post my results. This thing is my toy, not a daily driver, so it's fun to play with. I will say that it has been damn reliable.

And I like the subtle changes to the A750F (4WD auto transmission) shifting. My manner of driving off road does not require more power but when I get the urge on the on ramp it does feel good.

Jade's not a daily driver any more either. When she goes out it usually has something to do with dirt/sand/gravel. Well I guess the trips in the AM for coffee to a friends shop do count. Dirt/gravel lot. :)

Caveat: "I really don't care about fuel economy and you do anything mentioned here at your own risk"

I'm writing this as an experiment I completed with my AFT and PT, knowing that this would be controversial, but checking with my Chevron chemist he confirmed what I now know. No more EXPENSIVE 100 Octane! Yes, I stopped using the expensive MMT based octane boosters and the 100 octane pump gas. It's just too damn expensive. I'm mixing E85 pump fuel with 91 Octane pump gas. As it says E85 is 70% to 85% Ethanol and CA 91 Octane is 10% Ethanol. In CA it's almost impossible to get gas without Ethanol. I went to a station in SC that pumps E40 for race trucks. The results are E40 and the E85 mix produce about the same throttle response as 100 Octane VP. Other than my tail pipe smelling like grain alcohol no issues. Here's the ratio I'm running.

40% E85 to 60% 91 PON will yeild 95 Octane PON which is about E40, and no CEL.
Mixing E85 With Pump Gas: Getting Higher Octane For Less Money

BTW, yes, in really cold climates you might have to retune your ECU and should probably consider an E85 kit.

Try it, you'll like it.
