Rear door not opening

Got a head scratcher here. The rear door on my 2007 won't open. I've taken the plastic cover off of the inside of the door and can see that the linkages from the handle to the latch mechanism are not broken and can even, barely, see part of the latch assembly move when the door release is moved. I've listened to the lock mechanism and it seems to be functioning, though I haven't removed it from the door for a closer inspection. There is a lever on the lock mechanism that I can push back/forth as if it were a manual lock override but it doesn't do anything in relation to the latch letting go. I'm stumped.
First off, does anyone know if there is a way to pop the door latch open from the inside? It would be helpful to be able to diagnose this with the door open.
Second, does anyone have any ideas about what could be going on? Thanks for any assistance!

That happens to mine every once in a while. When it does I reach behind the cover and push the door handle forward towards the door, lock the doors, and then unlock them. I think something inside is sticking a little but I haven't gotten around to sourcing the problem yet. Hopefully it works for you.

crazy question: are your doors locked?

I had this "cannot open the dang back door" happen to me when I had opened the back glass (to open the glass hatch you must rotate the key cylinder in the "locked" direction). Since my other doors were already opened I hadn't noticed the car was locked. Almost took the whole rear door apart before I realized it was that simple.

Thanks, Roh. I gave it a shot but no luck. I'm starting to think it must be the lock module because the handle action seems similar to the time my driver's side lock went out.

Thanks Norm - that sounds like something I'd do but don't think it is in this case. Appreciate the reply.
I don’t mean to sound like “Siri” but here’s what I found. Really not much help because you can’t do these tests on the lock assembly if you can’t get the door open for access. Probably best done with the assembly removed.

Thanks - that diagram does show the manual override lever on the lock unit which is useful. I have tried moving it but, in either position, the door still doesn't un-latch.
So, electric solenoid operation a side, if you can get a screwdriver or tool of your choice pushing upwards on the tab I’m pointing at with the knife, that should release the latch. If you can hold that up, then push on the door it should open.

The second picture, I’m pointing at the tab that would normally be what lifts the tab you need to be pushing up. This should work! Good luck.

Thanks - I'll give it a shot. Getting the door open will at least allow me to remove the latch mech, which would be huge.
I'm having same issue. Just purchased this FJ. Unable to open the rear gate at all. I've seen cheap fixes on Youtube that only shows how to fix ONCE it's open, but I have tried everything to open it again so the repairs can be done. Still...need to figure out how to get it open though, without damaging anything. Need help!

So where do you live, Matt?

Columbia, South Carolina. But the vehicle is originally from Oregon for most of it's life. Then in Pennsylvania for 3 years. So it's seen its share of salt. Surprisingly not a lot of rust.
The reason I ask is, if you were close I’d offer to look at it. Unfortunately, I’m in Colorado.

Man that is awesome, I will have it shipped to you 😂. Thank you though!
Problem fixed. In case anyone else runs into this situation, here's what it turned out to be in my case. The lock mechanism was working fine. FJC-Man's pictures helped a lot by showing what part of the mechanism would move to release the door. I could see that when moving the handle, that part of the latch mechanism was moving just fine so I tried holding the handle up from the inside of the door and putting my shoulder into it. Popped open. The culprit was the plastic sheathing around the latch mechanism. The lock arm is metal with a hard plastic coating. The coating had split and bunched up on the lock arm which caused it to get stuck when the door was closed and the latch was in the down position. I cut the plastic off the latch arm and wd40'd everything. Back to working order.
I was having issues with my TT rear door. Whoever thought having that heavy tire on the back door was hoping... The tire weight sprung the back door, putting stress on the locking mechanism. I replaced the catch, and tried spray lube too. Just adding this if anyone finds rear door problems and it's not the plastic on the latch. I thought there might be an adjustment, but no. Then thought the hinges were bad. Went in to order the hinges (big money BTW) and the dealer said they had never sold a set (possible lie, who knows). Said to chack at the body shop, and they knew right away what it was. In and out in 45 minutes, and they didn't charge for the muscle action to 'reset' the door.

(The parts guy suggested moving the spare to the roof rack. Sure. Even with a proper mount, I would never want to try to get that thing down on the side of the road. Wow...)

Yep, mine is a little weirder than that, even after replacing the door handle (which I am a sales consultant for a Lexus store and let my service guys work in it) it will work sometimes and others not. It's almost like it's an alarm issue with the remote. Sometimes when I unlock with the remote it works, and then others it does not. Gremlins...

Step one of any used vehicle that I buy which had an alarm fitted: remove the alarm (even if it was a dealer installed option)
Probably not nearly as well made as the Toyota and likely to cause unnecessary trouble as it ages and begins to fail.
