I think you are referring to getting the oil in the front diff. What method do you suggest if not using a small hand pump??? I am coming up on 15K miles so should be doing this soon.

I'm referring to the front diff, transmission AND the transfer case. I used the small hand pump and I was sore for a week. No $hit, there I was, under the FJ pumping away quart after quart. This is some thick stuff, so I wasn't surprised. I mentioned this to some co-workers, and they suggested to just use a long tube and funnel. I'm open to any other suggestions.

Have you used the radiator additive purple ice?? It drops your water temps like 12 degrees. neat stuff, I've ran RP since my first oil change. it does rock but man Hella expensive!!

The napa I went to had a royal purple section. Yeah I saw Purple Ice. I'll change into that when it starts to heat up here in Seattle.

First, you don't need to change to Purple Ice. You simply put it in the radiator fluid you have now. It's a small bottle, so it won't displace much coolant at all.

And Royal Purple DOES ROCK! It just does. For all the reasons you pointed out, and it helps the engine run better, longer.

Personally, I wasn't too impressed with Purple Ice or their Power Steering fluid. I actually cooked the fluid and had to change it out of my steering system. Next time around I'm planning to go with the tractor steering fluid from Amsoil. A lot of racers have switched from RP for steering to the Amsoil. Seems to hold up better for full hydro apps.....can't say anything about stock applications.

I am planning on doing all of this when I get back from Iraq. Can you all please tell me what the best way to get this stuff in is..... BTW I am a newbie at changing Trans, TC and diffs so any other advice on that would be helpfull as well.

I ended up getting a case of the steering fluid for super cheap off one of the above online places (compared to finding it locally).

As for changing the fluid. Fairly straight forward process. Manual Trans, tcase and rear diff have a simple drain plug/fill plugs.

If you don't want to use a small hand pump, you can go to the local Lowe's, Home Depot, or hardware store and get a cheap pressure sprayer. Take the nozzle and/or gun handle off so that you have an open tube, put your favorite flavor of gear oil in, put the top on and pump away. I'm not sure how much faster it is, but it is easier. Just make sure you hose is long enough to reach under the vehicle and into the gearbox you want to fill. If you take the gun handle off, have a pair of needle nosed pliers handy so that you can pinch the hose when you want it to stop flowing.

If I take the needed lube to the dealer (yes there are other reasons to have lube when working with the dealer but I am talking engine and or gear oils) will they use the stuff. I know it shouldn't be that hard to change the oil but the gear stuff i really don't want to mess with and I am busy 6 days a week so I must spend time with the fam so the dealer is quicker and less agrivating for me.

if you are gonna bring it to the dealer with your own fluid, you might as well just bring it to your local quick lube. you will save big bucks, I always make sure to be downstairs to watch those guys and make sure they do it right. They usually do it for like 15 to 20 bucks, and they dispose of the other fluid.

Just do what I did, search on this forum. I found a few threads with pictures. Like Sean K said, it's really straight forward. If you mess it up, you'll see purple all over the place. trust me

While in Iraq, just spend some time with your maintenance section. They'll show you some tricks and tips.

Agreed, some dealers will, some won't, it depends on their mood or policy that day. The quicky lubes will but you definitely need to watch them like a hawk to make sure they do exactly as you want. It really is easy, but if you don't have the time or energy, go for it.

Thanks Sapper. Thats a good idea but we are so close to redeployment that there isnt much routine maintenance going on. Some of the mechanics are good friends though so they may be able to help me when I get around to doing it.

I don't know how much I'd trust that.....

You have to remember, they are pumping gear oil out of big 55 gallon (sometimes 20 gallon) containers. They are very unlikely to fill another container with your RP and then pump it into your diff/trans/tcase b/c it's going to take more time to dump their fluid and put in yours....and then there's cross "contamination" of different brands....not that it would matter....they will mix with no issues.

I dunno, I'm just skeptical of dealerships in general.

Good luck with it. If you really trust your's, then go for it. There are good dealers out there, they just never seem to coincide with me when I need service.

I've been a big fan of the RP since my first change too. You should just go ahead and do the Purple Ice now since it "really never" warm up in Seattle, OK maybe for 6 weeks! I lived in Gig Harbor for 5 years before tolls on the Narrows and loved it. Private beach front, kayaking all over the Sound. Great place to hang for a few years but for me ttooooooooo much rain. I can why so many people love Starbucks! They need something to keep their eyes open cause it's always cloudy. OK I'm dome bustin' your chops.
