I've always read mixed reviews on RP (at my other turbo forum). I guess it's ok for the FJ, so I'll give it a go on my next oil change.. it's been sitting in my garage forever. I hope 10-40 isn't too thick. .hopefully it'll be ok, since it's been pretty hot lately.

good luck and thanks for your service.....i just retired a couple years ago. sometimes I miss it...sometimes I dont....still proud of my service and those of you that continue to serve. God Bless.

I just changed over to Royal Purple for the front and rear diffs, transfer case and engine. I'll do the transmission next week. I bought the Royal Purple at Pep Boys.

To put the oil in the front diff I used a short length of clear tubing from Lowe's. Cost about 17 cents a foot. Put the spout of the bottle in one end and the other end in the fill hole and squeeze the bottle... Just call me Mr. Low Tech...

cheers,

dale

great info guys..... I just have one question... I have an MT FJ. I already did the transfer case and differentials oil change.

I want to do the transmission but I read somewhere that it is not as easy as the other stuff. I read the oil has to be at a certain temperature and that it is a very delicate process basically. My question is:

is what I read true? or does that only apply to the Automatic transmissions and not Manual transmissions?

Thanks,

That procedure only applies to the AT's.

Changing out the MT is pretty straightforward by comparison.

Okay, I will go ahead and ask the stupid question of the day. Is the oil purple?Would be nice to be able to determine, by looking, you are getting what you paid for.

Has anybody had problems using the RP trans fluid as RP does not consider it a suitable replacement for WS which is what the FJ has?
RP's (Max)ATF is not recommended to substitute for Toyota's Type WS. Redline's D6 is a Type WS equivalent.

i use royal purple for engine oil and redline on the gears.

i started overheating climbing hills/mountins in the summer months and used redline water wetter (i think its called?) in my radiator, along with a 15/85 coolant/water ratio. worked well.
this was in addition to a tranny cooler, and remote oil cooler and filter which added about a quart of extra oil and about half a quart of tranny fluid. the tranny cooler was before the radiator, which helped with keeping the temp down in the radiator.

Can you elaborate on your oil cooler setup? Perhaps you already did this in another thread, if so can you link?

Thanks,

pretty universal. call 'em and double check they will fit on your fj's. i highly recomment perma-cool products.
oil cooler/remote filter: Perma-Cool Engine Oil Coolers - JEGS

i also strongly recommend a tranny cooler for you a/t guys. very simple install, and will extend the life of your tranny.

to figure out the added oil capacity, mock up the hoses and cooler/remote filter to where you want them. cut the hoses. fill up your contraption with water, dump the water out, measure it, and add the capacity of the oil filter you are using. let the hoses/cooler dry completely before you put them on though.

this is what you get (minus the oil/oil filter).
