Looking for my first FJ cruiser. I'd like to stay under $20K. This listing seems to be one of the better deals I've seen in Utah for a while.

2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser on KSL.com

Seller has owned for 3 years.

What do you all think? Decent deal? What about the frame rust situation?

Why not this one? 50K miles isn't much difference. It appears to be stock and less abused. Take your $6K diff and mod it your way.

I'm a newb and you're an expert so I should listen to you. My initial reaction is that the one I posted looks to have a cleaner interior and a lot less miles. I also have an irrational aversion to dealerships. BUT, its also a lot more money than the one you posted, so maybe I should take your advice...

Before considering buying ANY FJ Cruiser, this is a MUST-READ if you want to be an informed buyer:

jimmy-buffett's Complete Guide to Buying or Selling...

After reading that, be advised that the market for used FJ Cruisers is currently VERY hot, and clean, late-model, rust-free, low-mileage vehicles often sell within hours of being listed.

If you want a good deal on a highly desirable vehicle, you won't have the luxury (time, that is) to post a "should I buy it?" inquiry on this forum.

You're going to have to be well-enough informed to evaluate the vehicle yourself (possibly with the help of a pre-sale inspection by a Toyota dealer or Toyota specialist mechanic), and move very quickly to lock in the sale ASAP.

The guy says $17,500 OBO so you can probably get that price down some at least.

It's leveled and has Bilstein shocks. Plus a Sony head unit, back up camera, rock rails and nice tires. Rust isn't bad from the one pick imo but can't see a whole lot.

Price I don't think is too bad for that year and miles.

I would certainly get a Carfax to check for accidents and etc.

All in all do your research and if all checks out it looks pretty nice especially considering the upgrades.

Dan, with you being in the SLC area, take the car (or cars) to Mark Miller Toyota for a pre purchase inspection to have them checked out. Take them to Ryan Barber and his team. They see 1-2 FJs a week as that is who I take all my dealership FJs for for PPI and the work. They will take good care of you. The rust I see on the pics you posted is a little hard to tell. I’d want to see how the frame looks at the various connection points, how the bolts, brakes, etc look underneath. If might be mostly surface rust that can be easily addressed, or, you might be seeing the tip of the iceber. Either way, PPI is cheap insurance. Ryan is a good dude and won’t upsell you, he will just do the assessment. Let him know you are particularly concerned with rust.

Don`t waste your time on a 2WD. I know Fj`s are hot right now but don`t over pay just because its an FJ. I`ve seen people selling for ridiculous prices. :)

Thanks, Kevin. I really appreciate the help!

Nah, that has a bit too much rust. I just recently got one, and I made a checklist of things to look for that helped me make a quick decision on one.

  • vin # history (super important for recalls, and maintainence)
  • underbody Rust (obviously) and other problems. Bring flashlight!
  • running fingers through seams of the car (to look for warped frames, and accidents that haven’t been reported)
  • scan tool for basic problems. I used an Ancel 410 ( https://www.amazon.com/ANCEL-AD410-...ocphy=9004417&hvtargid=pla-569205901666&psc=1) obd scan tool. It won’t give you the most comprehensive look, but it goes a long way. It helped me avoid an fj with a cylinder misfire issue.

I think those are the most important, aside from checking the engine, driving it for 10 minutes, 10 miles highway, and looking inside and out for dents, tears, etc.

The guys here gave me specifics to look out for: low mileage, and a newer model if possible.
I got me a 2008, and the only issue I have with it is a tire pressure system that needs to be fixed, and the previous owner was a smoker.

It’s an in between of take your time, and don’twait too long; come with a checklist similar to this, do your research, and check out as many as you can. If these check out, you can confidently pull the trigger the moment you find it.

Best of luck man! I hope this helps. I found mine in NYC of all places, 120k miles and no rust. Insane. May you find one just the same, if not better.
All the best 🙏🏽

it looks good the frame rust isn't bad, it just needs to be cleaned off down to the not rusted metal and coated. But as it sits right now the frame is perfectly structurally sound by the looks of it just needs a little love. I say if its what u want buy it.

Doesn't look terrible. I too am in UT and it took me 2 years to find my unicorn. I say go for it. Negotiate hard.

Hey check this one out. It already has a lot going for it, and looks good. White, 2010 4WD 5 speed Automatic, Base (no extra bling) with 122,419 Miles. Asking $23,350. Bet you could get it for $20,000. or close.

Thought it said BASE Model- but I don't think so: I see the rock rails, luggage rack, tinted windows, towing package, upgraded Stereo with Subwoofer, dashboard Temp, Compass, Inclinometer Set. It has A-Trac and Diff Lock and the Parking Sonar button- which means it senses when someone or something is behind you like a post or a person- and probably also means it has the rear view mirror with the back-up Camera (so helpful- as decreased back and back side vision is my only gripe). So it has both Convenience Packages like mine does ( and it has the 6 Disc CD Changer- I don't have it, and am fully loaded). It's got all the bells and whistles. It's nice to have the Factory Towing because after market tow bars stick down and can scrape. All that brings the price UP, and it's great that they don't know it's NOT the Base Model, LOL. You'll have to see if it has the wrap around window airbags- not sure when those came out (mine 2013). This FJ is at Mitsubishi Dealer, so some of this they are unfamiliar with, obviously.

Barring Rust underneath, or Bad CarFax this or similar would be a great place to start, and you can slowly upgrade bumpers, etc. It even has Nitto Grappler Tires! This looks to be a great FJ!! Has a mush in the right front over tire -black rubber thingie (minor).

Here's what 2010 looked like: 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser Offers More Power, Better Fuel-Efficiency - Toyota USA Newsroom

Harrison Mitsubishi- SouthTowne. 10736 South State Street, Sandy, Utah 84070. Telephone: 385-715-5096
Ask them to put it on the lift and send you pics of the front and back underneath. They should be more than willing to do that for you. And find out where it has been, and if they bought it at an Auto Auction. Any wrecks- especially where Air Bags have been deployed??

Good Luck! It took me 2 years to find mine as most had too much rust underneath. Glad I waited. Bargain hard and be prepared to walk.

Cannot post the link so you'll have to find it on Auto Trader, etc.
Maybe this direct link to the Dealership will work or you can copy and paste: Used 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser For Sale at HARRISON MITSUBISHI-SOUTHTOWNE | VIN: JTEBU4BF5AK072853
