Hopefully this helps someone dealing with the steering shake/shimmy issue.

So like many others, my '14 FJ had the dreaded steering shimmy. Tried all the normal fixes, tire balance, alignment, new shocks, thicker power steering fluid, and so on. Finally came down to the Upper control arms. I could grab the upper control arms and flex them, without a pry bar, quite a bit. Switched to aftermarket UCAs and finally no more shimmy. Obviously not all steering shimmies have the same cause but if you have it, check your control arms (upper and lower) for flex i.e. worn bushings or ball joint. If they flex too much the getting an alignment is a waste.

I did check the lowers but do not seem to have any flex.
