Just so everyone is on the right page, because it confused the hell outta me when I was looking at them all:

883 = front 'leveling' spring
884 = front "light" spring
885 = front "medium" spring
886 = front "heavy" spring

895 = rear "medium" spring
895E = rear "medium" spring 1.5inch
896 = rear "heavy" spring

Some places have them labeled differently, so pay attention to the NUMBERS when you're buying, not the light/med/heavy label.

I just put the 885/895's ("mediums") with OME shocks on and it's WAY stiffer than the factory setup. I thought it rode like a tractor. It has settled a bit, but it's way more firm. You can take a ride in my FJ if you wanna feel it, you might not like it because of your back Roger.

Forrest: same goes for you if you'd like to see what my mediums feel like, they're a huge change. Our bumpers weigh about the same, I'd suggest thinking about the mediums...

Leave the heavies for Brian. :lol:

I tend to agree with Jeff here. I ran an 885/895 setup for several years with an ARB and winch up front and didn't think it was too soft. (That said, I liked the ride a whole lot better with the much lighter MT tube bumper up front and SAWs with TC UCAs. On washboard roads at moderate speed there was no comparison. If you wheel at BC much, you are on such roads a lot.) My rig was a daily driver that got wheeled as often as I could, but it wasn't a dedicated trail rig by any stretch of the imagination.

I haven't talked to ARB about this in some time, but fairly early on they began dis-recommending 886s even with the ARB bumper due to issues (or at least perceived liability) with premature CV wear. I also seem to recall they went so far as to start referring to 885s as "heavy". Of course one could always get 886s directly.

Do your homework. Understand your expected load, normal operating conditions and risk. Know that 'heavy' doesn't mean better -- even if all of the cool kids are doing it. You are responsible for your own mods.

Caveat emptor. Cum grano salis. This advice is worth what you paid for it. ;)

x2 Metal Tech will confirm this for you, and I think others are moving that way too. The "heavies" are really only if you plan to put an almost ridiculous amount of weight on your rig.

So what your saying is that I have a ridiculous amount of weight on my rig? Anyway, I would install the 883's If you are just planning on a lift, The 884's if you are just adding a bumper, the 885's if you are adding a bumper and winch, and the 886's if you are like me and have a heavy bumper and winch, full skids, dual group 31 batteries, and a SC. Total added weight just in the front of my rig is about 400lbs to be able to run the 886's. If you are too stiff on the front you will wear your CV's quickly and if you are too stiff on the rear it will affect your ABS when going over small bumps.

hehe, it works for you Brian. If you have that much weight, it's actually pretty nice there is a spring out there than can handle it.

I read somewhere that the 886's were originally designed for the Prado's? That would make sense, at least to me, as they have a little more body to them and the same suspension... they might need the extra load bearing springs from the get go. I can't find where I read that, so it's complete speculation on my part at this point.

Good to know about the ABS in the rear, I was almost thinking mine was too stiff, but I haven't had anything beeping at me yet. Kinda makes me feel better.

Thanks for all the input guys, I'm getting this done at Les swab. After I install the ARB.
I could use some help getting that installed after I pick it up.
Thanks again guys.
Let me know when, I'll help if I can. Having a 2nd person makes positioning the bumper (especially one that heavy) a lot easier. It's pretty straight forward otherwise.

You should swing by Metal Tech this weekend if you can... They are having an open house. Lots of us will be their and I'm sure a few with OME so you can chat with folks. You can also probably look at the differences and talk with metal tech since they probably have a few on the self :)

Check Metal Tech face book for times - btw: BBQ and Beer to go with the FJs and tech demos.

So I've went with the warn bumper and M8000 winch, want to keep the original plane of vehicle and I'm not interested in lifting her up. I do some moderate wheeling at times (no rock crawling/mostly mud and snow), but most of my driving is over pavement and I use it as my daily transportation. I've ordered the 884 = front "light" spring and the
895E = rear "medium" spring 1.5inch. Did I get the formula correct?

Sounds about right to me! :cheers:
