Just got back to civilization today. This truly was a great trip. In fact I went back for two more days after Ken headed home. Doing the whole trail was the plan and I'm glad we did, but I was surprised to find the the eastern half heavily restricted with almost all side roads closed. The surprise was finding the bombing range almost limitless and some of the roads presented enough challenge to be classed as 4x4. Almost all the roads are sand with a few short sections of loose lava rock. And the fearsome silt beds were plentiful but all were dry, but deep ruts showed how bad they can be when wet.

I hope to return next year but will probably just stay within the bombing range and explore all the side roads.

Yep great trailers make a trip like this much more comfortable but a comment is due for Ken's AT Teardrop. For a trip like this with a different camp every night his is the real deal. One time we pulled into a site, he parks his rig, pulls out his chair and declares he's done. So yes, I was a touch jealous but then my trailer cost about 1/5 of his. ;-)

I think the devil is already messing with me. Had to drive for about four hours in a blizzard from Kayenta almost to Phoenix. Here is a shot of the snow storm as I'm approaching Flagstaff.

That storm pictured above turned out to really be the Devil's work. From Flag almost to PHX it was white knuckle driving. Heavy wet snow, near zero visibility, icy roads, flipped cars and truckers going too fast. Here is a shot of all the ice collected on the trailer.
