Re: Complete list and Comparison of Lift kits there all here!

Great idea and very well put together! For the sake of clarity, i would differentiate between "Suspension Systems" and "Lift Kits", as thier functionality and purposes are vastly different.

Donahoe, Camburg and OME would classify as suspension systems, while anything with a spacer would fall in the lift catagory.

As an aside, the words attributed to me are actually from Tim Lund at ARB. My views are further down the post. ;)

Great job otherwise... this thread should be a sticky in suspension tech and/or in a wiki/FAQ and kept upt to date...

On the All Pro Off Road site they have Coil-overs with Walker-Evans shocks With 12 way adjustable compression dampening, 0"-3" of lift for $899/pair..They also show a FJ with coil-over at 2.75" and the rear lift of 1". They don't say what they used on the rear. Just more comming soon! In the pic of the FJ it looks like the front is higher than the rear:confused: .

Anyone use the Camburg product before? I really like the look of it, but frankly have never heard of them.

Daystar - Spacer (carryover from 03+ 4runner)
Downey - coilover (carryover from 03+ 4runner)
Cornfed - Spacer (carryover from 03+ 4runner)

All Pro and Camburg both have Upper control arms as well.
Camburg also has a long travel kit.

All long travel kit does not include fiberglass fenders which are pure custom and currently nobody makes em.

I you guys were wondering about OME availbility. I think I called literally every single mayor OME carrier in the east coast and I found everything but the Rear Struts. (part # OME-N141s) If you know of any shop that has these in stock then We (up to 4 people) could get their OME kit tomorrow and not in 3 weeks.

K_os,
Check with Toyteclifts.com in Colorado. They have 141's coming in on Mon.
or Tues. for me. We are going to be testing out different OME springs and
shock setups on my FJ next saturday.

sweet, I am hoping getting everything separately would be a tad cheaper than the kit. I hope, if it isn't then I guess I'll wait a little bit

Re: Complete list and Comparison of Lift kits there all here!

One question, Is the Donahoe Kit that much better????
They're all good stuff. It all boils down to how much you want to spend. Remember that they all do the same thing (lift the rig so you can stuff larger tires and hit harder trails).

Spacers are the cheapest solution but long term the ride gets harsh. It's the technology behind it that causes this. OME (coil and shock) are plush like stock. Eventually it wears out like a stock coil and shock but it's affordable. Coilovers are the best for high speed and even super low speed as it is valved perfectly for each vehicle (in most cases). These are rebuildable so you can always reuse em.

The more you spend the better the ride ultimately gets while you're on the trails. If you can afford it, get the $$ stuff, otherwise just get the cheaper solution and call it a day. Just remember, you're trying to get a suspension lift to be able to add larger tires for the more difficult trails and give you more ground clearance. The vast majority will do the OME as it's a direct stock replacement (look and feel). Those that want a quick fix will do the spacers. Those that can afford the coilovers will go that route. Personally I feel that the OME's are the all around solution but if I had the extra $ I'd do the coilover setup. Just remember that the coilover setup will only setup the front (Donahoe does not have rears yet at this time) so you're still going to be stuck w/ doing something for the rear (ome?).

Good luck

Re: Complete list and Comparison of Lift kits there all here!

not all kits are created equal, infactmost are not good
there are differences between suspension kits and lift kits
and you cannot go by the name to tell
they do not all do the same thing, and the differences can be a mater of safety and wear and tear.
a lift kit does just that, it lifts, it takes in no consideration for origonal geometry of the stock vehicles suspension or steering, it can affect the vehicle with such problems as harsh ride, tire wear, stiff steering or bump steering
also it can affect angles of the driveshaft to pinion amoung others.
they usually are cheap spacer lifts
suspension lifts, on the otherhand, will deal with these issues, they can include quite a few parts depending on how much they deal with them, also they usually replace springs and shocks, or coilovers, as they are dealing with the added leaverage of longer travel suspensions. the better ones start to replace control arms and shock towers as well a A arms
you can look at the suspensions made for the jeep wrangler and see kits from 200 dollars to over 5000, it depends on how much you want the vehicle to work correctly after installation.
Price however is not a quide, the best way to tell is asking someone who has run a certain suspension for a year.
now do not ask a guy who cannot afford to can the susupension and replace it, if he is stuck with it, he will defend it to the end, ask someone who can afford to swap out, they only stick with what works
unfortuanately, we are at this time putting parts on our beloved FJ Cruisers that were designed for a vehicle that uses a version of the frame we use, but little else, so feedback will not be forthcoming for a while. And first impressions usually are not the same as having run it for a year.
unlike the poser, who only lifts his vehicle to shove bigger tires under it, a offroader has a bigger picture in mind, now fortunately for us, Toyota has put a factory locker in tthis vehicle as a option so we are not worried about that and they have seen fit to equipt it with 32 inch tires, that is signifacant to us as we will not have to do drive train mods to get large tires under this thing. So with the lift we are looking mainly for increased articulation and clearence under the wheel wells to take advantage of this. 32 or 33 inch tires do not change the rpm range much so we will not have to deal with regearing our diffs till we start adding 35s or larger.

Re: Complete list and Comparison of Lift kits there all here!

Just giving this one a bump since there is so much talk about lifts.

Still anxiously awaiting the the Donahoe rear. Don't like the idea of super trick coilovers in the front with a cheesy spacer lift in back. What so hard about making springs and shocks for the rear anyway?
