WELCOME TO THE SCORPION BUILD-UP THREAD

The sword is more important than the shield and skill is more important than either.

All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible.
--Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas Edward Lawrence, CB, DSO

The Scorpion FJ, though unworthy of the man, has been created in honor of T. E. Lawrence (1888-1935), may he rest in peace.

When I bought the FJ, I mapped out a philosophy on which direction a build-up should take. My philosophy was built around a vehicle that could operate, removed from populated areas, and support my interest in exploration and examination of unsettled regions (increasingly difficult to find). Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple.

My philosophy in modifications is simple. I wanted to create a strong, capable, sustainable rig that would BRING ME HOME at the end of the day. Everything I've done to my FJ has that particular end in mind.

My favorite FJ Cruiser Moment: I'm driving my FJ on an expedition and I can't fall asleep at night under the stars because reality is finally better than my dreams.

This is the stock FJ.

I bought my FJ Cruiser on December 23, 2006 as a Christmas present to myself since it was highly unlikely that anyone else would buy an FJ for me no matter how hard I tried to get off the naughty list.

My daughter Emilie agreed to ride shotgun with me on trail runs.

Meet the Scorpion - Current phase of build up/build out for my FJ.

EXPEDITIONS

When selecting team members everyone looks for a combination of factors in their team mates. The most important is an absolute passion for the project, an ability to communicate, a diversity of proven expedition-specific skills in remote and hostile environments, physical stamina and mental toughness. FJ Cruiser expeditions are designed first and foremost to be fun. Secondly, they hone your skill sets by forcing you into new and unfamiliar situations that requires you to adapt and overcome. Thirdly, you get to make the run in a Toyota FJ Cruiser.

You're on your own. And you know what you know. You are the guy who'll decide where to go.

Re: Meet the Scorpion (Uphill's Build-Up)

Just a little update to all. I recieved a call from Larry & Thong yesterday. They wanted to "RUB" it in that they had a chance to see the ARB FJ with a VERY HOT ARB Rep, I was told on a scale of 1-10 she was a "12", but that was not what the call was about, they wanted to tell me about the ARB FJ was outfitted with the Very First ARB FJ Safari Snorkel in the US. They kept telling me how cool it was, and didn't I wish I had one too... Hey, guys stay safe and talk to you soon :D

I wish I was there with ya!
Re: Meet the Scorpion (Uphill's Build-Up)

I'll believe it when I see picts :D
Re: Meet the Scorpion (Uphill's Build-Up)

Living life, like there's no tomorrow!!!! Have a great time. :) Let's see who will get a hundred thousand miles on the FJ first. UPHILL is on his way.
Re: Meet the Scorpion (Uphill's Build-Up)

Just about all of Larry's mileage is off-road. I think he is over 20,000 miles on his. :)
Re: Meet the Scorpion (Uphill's Build-Up)

Hope you guys are having a blast, I'm sure you are. Wish I could go with. :(

Re: Meet the Scorpion (Uphill's Build-Up)

Kokopelli Trail - Part One

The East Coast Trail Team & a few additional rigs embarked on a 4 day expedition from Grand Junction, CO to Moab, UT. Relying only on FJ Cruisers and the gear we can carried, we traversed the 142 mile Kokopelli trail stem to stern from November 6th – 10th. The trip involved basic and advanced water crossings, some challenging rocking and crawling and a lot of magnificient scenery. We drove through the lush Colorado River Valley, breached high cliffs, crawled along rimrock and transited the beautiful La Sal Mountains.

ABOUT KOKOPELLI (background): Kokopelli is a fertility deity, usually depicted as a humpbacked flute player (often with a huge phallus and antenna-like protrusions on his head), who has been venerated by many Native American cultures in the Southwestern United States.

TCAO and I left SoCal for the trip to Grand Junction, Colorado and crossed through some spectacular scenery on the way.

SCORPION overlooks Snow Canyon near St. George, UT

TCAO poses for a photo in the early morning sun with red rock in the background.

Yes, as we reported to SHADOW WARRIOR, we did meet Lovely Lisa Wood in the ARB FJ Cruiser (on her way back from the SEMA Show) in Barstow, CA and had the chance to check out the new ARB snorkel first-hand.

After arriving at the Double Tree Hotel in Grand Junction we had a group feast, crashed for the night and awoke the next morning for the traditional 8:45 am departure.

GUSTAF - Silver "Trail Team" FJ Cruiser with FJCRUZR (flew in from Atlanta)
WOODY - Black "Trail Team" FJ Cruiser with STEAL63 (flew in from New York)
TROY, GARRETT & JAMES - Yellow "Trail Team" FJ Cruiser
TCAO - Titanium FJ Cruiser (SoCal)
UPHILL - Titanium SCORPION FJ Cruiser (SoCal)
HANK & 9ERSGIRL - FZJ90 (Wisconsin)
STAGECOACHCO - VooDoo Blue FJ Cruiser (Colorado)
CRAZYHERMIT & NETTI - VooDoo Blue FJ Cruiser (New Mexico)
PRESSUREPOINT & DAVEC - VooDoo Blue FJ Cruiser (Colorado)
WAGGONER5 & TREEROOTCO - FJ55
FREDB - Land Rover LR3
ADAMR - Land Rover 110
MADDBAGGINS & PHIL - FZJ80 w/Trailer
DEVO - FJ60

FUEL PUMP BOB & THIRDMEMBER also joined us for the expedition. More on those two characters later.

When FUEL PUMP BOB (third from left - looks like a Mountain Rat) told us where he proposed to go, I nearly swallowed my tongue (yes, I'm the one at the left trying to swallow my tongue).

Briefing. Gustaf is telling everyone not to be stupid.

Our first stop was Rabbit Valley/Canyon.

I got a zoom photo of a rare and often dangerous jackalope that was preening itself.

The obligatory group photo.

TCAO discovers the Rio Colorado!

We camped at Fish Ford. There was no water, there were no fish beyond the can of Starkist Tuna I opened for a snack and only Toyotas and Land Rovers were present - no Fords. So I wasn't impressed by the guy who named the campground at all. The Trail Team cooked Chili. Thank heavens.

It was cold that first night at Fish Ford and got down to 17 degrees (F). Note below that WOODY is wearing shorts in 17 degree weather.

I think that WOODY is from Wisconsin where 17F is the temp where it's politically correct to wear shorts or long pants.

Note that TCAO (Arctic Explorer, master of Prudhoe Bay) is bundled up like Nanook-of-the-North, is seated in his FJ with the heater on.

GUSTAF toasts us with iced tea because he doesn't think that 17 is cold either.

Kokopelli Trail - Part Two

We left the camp at Fish Ford and headed out across the plains. There, minding their own business roadside were a herd of pronghorn antelope {not to be confused with the savory but dangerous jackalope that hang out in Rabbit Valley/Canyon (above)}

Ducks in a row.

Picture of the back of CRAZYHERMIT'S rig heading down toward Dewey Bridge. If you're not the lead dog, the view remains the same...

Scorpion fords the Dolores River. A snorkel would have been overkill in this situation.

We forded the river again -- and again.

And ended up at our second night's camp.

Though I have no photos to show of the Iron Chef competition, I was distinguished and set apart from the other aspiring chefs by coming in last in a field of six contestants.

Demonstrating superior survival skills, I fed the judges rat burger. We're not talking about a filthy wharf rat. These are range fed Colorado mountain rats and I snared and slaughtered the little beasts earlier in the day. Even so, I came in a distant "last place". Where is the logic in that decision?

KOKOPELLI TRAIL - PART 3

Pay no attention to WOODY, off to the right, standing by himself...

Our belly's full of UPHILL's Rat-Burger and a good night's sleep behind us, we headed for the Top of the World.

There is a lot of climbing to do in order to get to the top.

TCAO

Robert earns the name THIRDMEMBER when his rear differential blows on the way to to the top of the world. For any other expedition, it would be problematic.

For this crew, it's a quick trail repair (spare rear diff carried by the Trail Team) and everybody is back in business.

Scorpion at the Top of the World.

The view from the top is such that words are insufficient to share how it feels to be there.

KOKOPELLI TRAIL - PART FOUR

The Rose Garden:

The Rose Garden had some rough spots. No significant carnage beyoned scraped sliders and skids. FUELPUMPBOB gave us a scare when he went off camber --- bad -- and though he said it was no big deal, those of us watching expected him to go over.

KOKOPELLI TRAIL - PART FIVE

As the trip drew to a close most of the rigs were running on fumes/fuel lights on. MAN-A-FRE, where is my extended range/aux. fuel tank?

Looking back at other rigs following Scorpion "uphill".

Headed over the La Sal mountains to Gateway, CO.

Trail Damage and aftermath:

The marker antenna I use was sheared off on the way up to the top of the world. The fiberglass shattered just above the aluminium mount. You'll also note that the Aeroflow headlight covers gave up the ghost. They had trail damage and the velcro was no longer strong enough to hold them on. I will replace them with a new pair since I like them very much. In another situation I might just replace the velcro but these have a few hits/headlight saves and they're getting beat.

I lost (another) primary antenna in the area east of Mt. Pleasant, Utah the day after the Kokopelli expedition ended in some cedars. It was a VERY rough trail, very steep and I couldn't stop or I might not have made it to the top. I need to come up with an antenna that won't rip off. (suggestions?) I lost the last one up on the east side of Big Bear Lake, CA.

SO - I thought that since I was in Mormon country, I'd take the Scorpion to the local church in the hope that the LDS people could miracle the antennas back and fix the aeroflow headlight covers to their new and pristine condition.

I was told that the Scorpion (and its driver) may be well beyond redemption. Not that it's news to anyone.

Great pictures Larry. That looks like a really sweet journey. Ratburgers? Oh my gaud! A joke right? Yuck. But hey I guess if you were starving then eat up.

The rear end the went out, what's the build date? was he just motoring along or spinning wheels and then they caught traction and Boom?
Re: Meet the Scorpion (Uphill's Build-Up)

Great stuff Larry!
It was great meeting you and TCAO...
I don't care what was in those burger, they were good!!!
I hope we get to do this again and don't be a stranger when you're in Atlanta.
Re: Meet the Scorpion (Uphill's Build-Up)

Great report Larry. Wish I could have been there.
Re: Meet the Scorpion (Uphill's Build-Up)

OK Larry, Looks like we may need to use FOUR instead of three dualock's.
I'll see what kind of deal I can wrangle from Paige.
Was Thong running his H.L.C.'s? If so how did his do? I haven't had time to get over to Aeroflow lately to pick up the little dualock buttons.
Promice I'll get to both this week.
Glad everyone returned safe and had fun on the trip.
Man YOU RETIRED GUY'S......................................:)

They're clean, they're bush meat. This is what FJCRUSR had to say about the rat meat (add a French Canadian accent):

TCAO and I have some insight on that. Toyota changed the rear differential manufacture in FEBRUARY 07. So a build after that date will have the new, softer gears that will give and take better. The earlier gears are harder and are better suited to pavement. They usually break when you "hop" the rear end. THIRDMEMBER was taking a much harder line than we took up over a ledge (climbing) and in order to get the back end over he gave it the gas and the rear end "hopped" over. When it came down, 9 teeth snapped off the rear diff.

Larry, I originally looked at the polycarbonate headlight covers, but ended up getting the 3M protection. Headlamp and Signal Lamp Kits are about $33 delivered.

3M quote: "Both in the real world and in the lab, our covers have proven that they will withstand a barrage of 1" diameter stones (about 1oz.) at speeds up to 120 m.p.h. with no damage to the lens they protect."

And they don't fall off on the trail.

Moi...never!:grinbiginvert:
I am still decompressing from the trip. The FJ is unloaded but it's still filthy and there is the repair to trail damage and a closer inspection of what things look like once the mud is washed off.

More than anything, I'm a little sad that the trip is over. The Kokopelli run was very fun and I could do that sort of thing on a regular basis without tiring of it.

It was nice to have you there to prod us along and share your experiences. Next time you want to come out from Georgia - you're always welcome to ride with me.

Actually, uphill's HLCs did not fall off even though the dual locks were no longer have the original holding strength due to repeated removals from cleaning the HLCs and the headlights. I don't think films will be able to take 1/16" gouges from juniper branches.
