WELCOME TO THE SCORPION BUILD-UP THREAD

The sword is more important than the shield and skill is more important than either.

All men dream, but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds, wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act on their dreams with open eyes, to make them possible.
--Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas Edward Lawrence, CB, DSO

The Scorpion FJ, though unworthy of the man, has been created in honor of T. E. Lawrence (1888-1935), may he rest in peace.

When I bought the FJ, I mapped out a philosophy on which direction a build-up should take. My philosophy was built around a vehicle that could operate, removed from populated areas, and support my interest in exploration and examination of unsettled regions (increasingly difficult to find). Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple.

My philosophy in modifications is simple. I wanted to create a strong, capable, sustainable rig that would BRING ME HOME at the end of the day. Everything I've done to my FJ has that particular end in mind.

My favorite FJ Cruiser Moment: I'm driving my FJ on an expedition and I can't fall asleep at night under the stars because reality is finally better than my dreams.

This is the stock FJ.

I bought my FJ Cruiser on December 23, 2006 as a Christmas present to myself since it was highly unlikely that anyone else would buy an FJ for me no matter how hard I tried to get off the naughty list.

My daughter Emilie agreed to ride shotgun with me on trail runs.

Meet the Scorpion - Current phase of build up/build out for my FJ.

EXPEDITIONS

When selecting team members everyone looks for a combination of factors in their team mates. The most important is an absolute passion for the project, an ability to communicate, a diversity of proven expedition-specific skills in remote and hostile environments, physical stamina and mental toughness. FJ Cruiser expeditions are designed first and foremost to be fun. Secondly, they hone your skill sets by forcing you into new and unfamiliar situations that requires you to adapt and overcome. Thirdly, you get to make the run in a Toyota FJ Cruiser.

Re: Meet the Scorpion (Uphill's Build-Up)

Actually, uphill's HLCs did not fall off even though the dual locks were no longer have the original holding strength due to repeated removals from cleaning the HLCs and the headlights. I don't think films will be able to take 1/16" gouges from juniper branches.
Sorry, I shouldn't have assumed that they fell off . . . looking at the carnage I should have said "removed by external forces" ;^ )
The headlight protection film is actually thicker than the paint protection film (PPF), but I don't know for a fact that they can take gouges from juniper branches. However, I do know the PPF can take a head-on collision with another vehicle (see pics at the bottom of linked page) w/o scratching the paint.

p.s. Nice pics of the trip . . . still jealous as ever!
Re: Meet the Scorpion (Uphill's Build-Up)

They're clean, they're bush meat. This is what FJCRUSR had to say about the rat meat (add a French Canadian accent):

TCAO and I have some insight on that. Toyota changed the rear differential manufacture in FEBRUARY 07. So a build after that date will have the new, softer gears that will give and take better. The earlier gears are harder and are better suited to pavement. They usually break when you "hop" the rear end. THIRDMEMBER was taking a much harder line than we took up over a ledge (climbing) and in order to get the back end over he gave it the gas and the rear end "hopped" over. When it came down, 9 teeth snapped off the rear diff.
Note to self, don't spin hop and drop and lock in my FJ, or possible BOOM may result. Thanks Larry. I still can't believe you really made bushburgers that's killer.

Next time we make an overnighter where HIGHBEAMS is present, I'll set some snares and we'll see what we can trap and kill for his dinner. I don't know but...:worried: he may not be able to save the cactus THIS TIME.:grim:

That's awesome I'd really like to learn the fine art of setting snares myself.
Re: Meet the Scorpion (Uphill's Build-Up)

Again, I wish I could have been there with you. Great pics and story line Larry as always. Hey buddy, if you can't find anyone to eat your Ratburgers, let me know. I would be proud to have one with ya. I have ate things a lot worse in my life then a rat....:D

Gald you guys are back and safe, just suffering a little minor trail damage. :)
Re: Meet the Scorpion (Uphill's Build-Up)

I'm so envious of Larry. It's like Christmas everyday! :)

Re: Meet the Scorpion (Uphill's Build-Up)

I'll tell you straight, this Kokopelli Trail run was FUN. It's just about as much fun as you can possibly have with your clothes on.

:indifferent: I'm depressed at the moment because I'm home and not out on the trail. :indifferent:

But there's always another expedition.

The Scorpion needs new antennas, I'm buying a HAM radio in addition to the CB and am installing more toys on the FJ in the next couple of weeks (yes, to include the snorkel). So next time, I'll be even better prepared. Bud is sending my ARB plate and the Beefy fuel tank skid to be powdercoated (red) tomorrow and when that's done they'll be headed my way. I'm putting in a Lowrace 540c GPS, aux battery/fuse block and several other surprises. I just got off the phone with WRIGMAN who scored me some replacement Aeroflow headlight covers to replace the trail damaged units. I tell you, it IS like Christmas.

I think that SANTA needs to deliver presents in an FJ because it will go everywhere on the planet! Maybe if I put a red light on the front of the FJ it will naturally fly...

Man that is gonna be nice Larry. :bigthumb:
That GlobalMap® Baja 540C Off-Road GPS Navigation is SWEET! Where do you plan on installing it and the HAM, and do you know if Bud is working on the exhaust skid yet :cowtounge:

The truck is awesome, that is a hell of a list of mods.
By the way, out of curiosity, how old is your daughter?

Thanks for the kind comments on the truck.

Re: Meet the Scorpion (Uphill's Build-Up)

Because the trip report is combined with the build report ( :) ) I have a combined question: How did all of the mods & upgrades perform? What broke loose? What total luxury item was a joy to have?

For the broken antennas maybe a mounting point relocation is one approach because the antennas cannot take the impacts that are breaking them.

Another approach would be similar to some of the military manpacks with the antenna tilt bracket at the base of the antenna. Instead of resisting an impact the antenna mount will allow a partial breakaway.

Two other suggestions:

Limb risers in the front and move the antenna away from the corner of the bumper or....

...or a CB-style large spring at the base of the antennas. Hmmm, or a military SINCGARS antenna base with the large spring....

EDIT: Just remembered that some ham antennas have tilt mounts so that the antenna can be mounted up on a roof rack but fold over when going in a garage.

Re: Meet the Scorpion (Uphill's Build-Up)

Because the trip report is combined with the build report ( :) ) I have a combined question: How did all of the mods & upgrades perform?
Everything worked remarkably well. I know that may sound trite, but it did. I just got out from crawling under the FJ from front to back with wet towels, cleaning everything off to see if something broke. It all looks intact.

Sleeping in the back of the FJ is just plain uncomfortable. Because I'm 6' and not a thin man, there's not much to be done but suffer with it. I've come up with a few ideas but most of them haven't worked well in the past. Jason DeMello and I were talking about this sleeping in the FJ thing this morning at his shop and he's just as miserable as I am when trying to get comfortable. I'm thinking of designing a small tent set-up that will go over the rear door and mount onto the swong-out Kaymar bumper but I don't have the bumper yet. Will there be a Scorpion Sleeper mod? Stay tuned.

SCRAPES
(a) Scrapes on the bottom of the rear differential.
(b) Scrapes on the BudBuilts.
(c) Scrapes on the leading edge armor for the lower control arms.
(d) Scrapes on the sliders where they ...:worried: slid. Scrapes on the slider skids (ARB slider skids)

Keep in mind that everything was scraped before this trip to some extent but I banged the armor up even more. The more disturbing was the scrapes on the bottom of the rear differential, but there's no damage and the impacts weren't as evident as the scrapes that TCAO had on his.

SUSPENSION

Flawless. I don't understand why everybody doesn't run a Donahoe suspension system. Really.

TIRES

After about 15,000 miles of primarily trail driving and serious off-road abuse, the Nitto's are showing the first signs of wear. I am absolutely sold on the Nitto TG's and the Walker Evans beadlock wheels.

What broke loose?

(a) The front antenna that I use as a marker was ripped off by a cedar branch when I was climbing up a waterfall, overgrown with cedars. TCAO heard it shear off with a twang but I didn't. I was concentrating on making it up and he was waiting behind me.

It will be replaced by a HAM antenna (functional).

(b) The rear CB antenna (4' Firestick) sheared off in a stand of cedars near Manti, Utah after the Kokopelli Expedition. I was showing off to a friend and was going up an impossible slope that topped off in thick cedars. If I had stopped it would have been a very bad thing and so I kept going and heard the antenna snap off. Not much could be done in that situation.

I'll replace it with another Firestick. I was over-driving the rig when I lost the antenna, showing off, trying to be the "big dog", the blood was up. My fault.

(c) Aeroflow light covers that have taken a huge beating to date finally gave up the ghost. My buddy WRIGMAN picked up a new set for me (with two extra lock buttons per light cover) and they're already on the rig.

(d) Right tail light is broken (but intact under the guard). I broke it on Odessa/Doran Loop (near Calico Ghost Town, Barstow, CA) and it held together for this entire run but I need to put a new one in.

What total luxury item was a joy to have?
Do I have any total luxury items? Perhaps the Pelican Cases. I have everything organized and modularized in Pelican Cases. They are water-proof, dust-proof, take one heck of a beating and I uncinch them, pull them out of the FJ and use what I need. Sleep in the FJ and then throw them in the next morning and cinch them down. They are a luxury but I think of them as a necessity.

The Springer MPAC (rear door storage) is a luxury item but again, it is so darned functional that I don't think of it as a pink furry back-rest sort of thing.

For the broken antennas maybe a mounting point relocation is one approach because the antennas cannot take the impacts that are breaking them.
There isn't much choice as to location on the antennas. Brush grabs them and rips them off. It has to do somewhat with the style of driving and the location where I was driving and somewhat with --- ok, I'm here, I have to go there, and if something breaks off, there's not much I can do about it but cry later.

Another approach would be similar to some of the military manpacks with the antenna tilt bracket at the base of the antenna. Instead of resisting an impact the antenna mount will allow a partial breakaway.
Like the short PRC-25 antenna? The problem is that they "whip" off-road and they whip into the FJ.

Limb risers in the front and move the antenna away from the corner of the bumper or...
.

My marker antenna fit into the ARB bumper IMMEDIATELY behind the bull bar. I don't know what else could be done to protect it.

EDIT: Just remembered that some ham antennas have tilt mounts so that the antenna can be mounted up on a roof rack but fold over when going in a garage.
That's what I'm trying to do with that front antenna. A tilt mount behind the bull bar.

Now what did I want that I didn't have?
An electric tea kettle that plugs into the back and can heat water for a cup-o-soup/cup-o-noodles or hot chocolate without getting out the propane stove. And I bought one today for $9.00 at Target.

So often cooking is a pain in the neck. You arrive at camp near dark, you're tired, and something warm is what's called for. You wake up, it's colder than a witch's teat and you don't want to whip up a full meal, set up a table, etc.

That is my (current) solution. I can augment it if I want to, and I'll still bring a camp stove -- but -- for the most part, that's what I eat on the road and it's enough. Dry salami, crackers, cheese, things like that are good too -- you don't have to heat them or clean up afterward.

Coming Mods in the next month or two:

MAN-A-FRE aux. fuel tank (take the jerry cans off the roof)

Kaymar rear bumper from MAN-A-FRE

SCORPION Mount (I was over at Jason DeMello's shop talking to him about it today) - endoskeleton for the rear of the FJ.

Overhead lights front and rear including floods, driving lights and strobes. (from DIRTY PARTS in LA)

Aux. Battery with Fuse Block - Cruiser Larry ordered the parts yesterday

Lowrance 540c GPS - Due from Lowrance in the third week of November

ARB Snorkel (due in next week)

Products ordered from All Pro: NOTHING Not now, not ever again. Caveat Emptor (let the buyer beware)

The Silk Road Expedition is still in the formative stages and I don't want to front anyone I have spoken to in terms of sponsors because the deal isn't inked yet.

The Mongolian Govt. has approved the plan. I will be in Mongolia in February for work meetings (on topics other than this expedition) with both President Nambaryn Enkhbayar and Prime Minister Miegombyn Enkhbold and will firm up the preliminary approval, set firm dates, etc.

The general plan is to follow the a route Genghis Khan took from Ulaanbaatar through the northern Gobi Desert and across Mongolia to the Caspian Sea region - and return to Ulaanbaatar. The precise expedition route hasn't been approved by the Mongolian Govt.

At the moment, I'm throwing the spaghetti against the wall and hope it will stick!

Amazing stuff Larry. I like the elec. tea kettle thats is genius.

I am really looking forward to what comes of the Silk Road Expedition. Ever since you told us about it on the Mojave Road run I have been wondering about it. I can't wait till I have more free time so I can do more trips like you are doing and planning. Hopefully next year will allow me to do much more wheeling.
Re: Meet the Scorpion (Uphill's Build-Up)

Please keep us posted on the Silk Road Expedition. Sounds like a once in a lifetime experience.

I was talking to Thong about this the other day, and it sounds like it's going to be a great expedition! Very few are lucky enough to go such a trip, hats off to you Larry for putting it together.
