Re: Meet the Scorpion (Uphill's Build-Up)

Personally the IV kits can be a bit of a problem for most persons. It could be added yet that is why I added the oral rehydration salts. Regular saline would be good hextend would be better yet we run into alot of problem running a blood volumizer. I think that for the amount of blood loss you would normally see along with heat injuries the fluid side can be covered with water and the salts.

Personally I do carry Saline and Ringers Lactate yet that is another story.

Re: Meet the Scorpion (Uphill's Build-Up)

I appreciate the suggestions and will print them and add those items to my list of things to pick up. In addition to the steri strips, I need to pack a tube of super glue. Once the wound is closed with the strips the super glue helps keep the skin together. This presumes that it's not a jagged tearing laceration where we're back to trimming the skin and the traditional sutcher. I know that the surgical sealant market is a lot more advanced than that, but we're talking short term solutions to trauma.

I would also add a CAT Tourniquet never know what could happen miles away from nowhere and could definitely save someone's life.
I have one in the kit, but it's not on the list.

Rehydration salts
I have traditional salt tablets to maintain electrolite levels but it wouldn't hurt to revisit that. It's especially important if you have a patient that has dysentery or similar. I also carry Flagil in the kit. I don't think that's on the list above either. One would hope that nobody would be drinking contaminated water, but just in case, they can be hard to kill without it.

PM me I would be happy to send you a few of these items.[/QUOTE]

Will do! (thanks!!)

might as well throw in some IV kits too
It can be challenging to insert a catheter into somebody that's in shock if you don't practice. I know from the giving and receiving end. But maybe it wouldn't hurt to have a couple bags along.

I think that the salts are enough unless we're talking quite serious trauma or dysentery (or radiation sickness) where normal oral hydration doesn't work. It would be more important for an expedition of a longer duration than for a situation where you're within an hour of a hospital in North America.

A few more Martinez Canyon (AZ) pictures

I posted this first bit on the 2 Buggies and an FJ thread and it's re-posted here:

Putting it all into perspective.

I received a disk of photos from SEANK that his buddy Brian took. (thanks Brian and Sean)

This is a great photo of me STARTING down through the luge.

Yes, it was a very close thing. It did shave metal from my left rear tail light guard but the rig survived - Thanks to Sean and Larry (once again, they saved that whole left side of the rig through world class spotting).

You can't see it because of the angle of the shot, but the pipe is about 30 meters long and it's that tight ALL THE WAY DOWN. And I don't care how cool or uncool your FJ is, there is a substantial chance of damage. You can see SEANK straining to keep me out of the wall.

Friday-Sunday
MARCH 7-8-9, 2008

I'm posting this here just because. I'm interested in making a Death Valley Run. Actually Poker Dawg came up with the idea. Weather permitting, this might be a great weekend to run the Death Valley - 2 nights out under the stars. Exploring Death Valley and maybe run up into some of the Nevada Mining country. If you read this and you're interested, let me know. I might even be persuaded to order stickers... let me know.

There are no conflicting events posted on the SoCal calendar.

The new pictures are killer. The area looks amazing and has some crazy wheeling to go with it.

Death Valley is right before my birthday so I might have to make it a birthday expedition. :thinkerg:

Larry . . . .You're not rubbing this in on purpose are you ? I've been wanting to visit Death Valley for years . . . You may find that when you least expect it, you have a Woodsman on your hands to be dealt with . . . tick tock, tick tock . . .

You'd be welcome. I'm not posting this on the regular trail run page but everyone is welcome providing that they have (1) an FJ (2) the desire to run the Death Valley and ...beyond.

Re: Meet the Scorpion (Uphill's Build-Up)

The Scorpion turned 1 year old.

Last year

This year

Over 10,000 on-dirt miles has made this past year remarkable. I've met many friends as a result of wheeling my FJ and from the Forum and I would be remiss and less than grateful if I didn't acknowledge that to all of you.

Imagination is more important than knowledge because it provides the spark that moves the world. I find that the solitude that comes from driving to a remote place and simply thinking, uninterrupted by the modern, helps feed my imagination. A person starts to live when he can live outside himself. The FJ and some of my journeys of this past year has helped me "live".

Re: Meet the Scorpion (Uphill's Build-Up)

I haven't posted on your build up thread before. It's been a great pleasure for me and a learning experience reading up on your adventures as well as your modification trials and tribulations (as it will never be done - because you will always be improving on what you have done thus far).

In one year you have done more than most will do in their lifetime of offroading adventures.

Looks like the up coming year(s) will be filled with more exciting trips for you, your family, friends and of course Scorpion :)

Congrats to you and your fj life enhancing "experience".

Carpe Diem!

Re: Meet the Scorpion (Uphill's Build-Up)

Many of you wanted to know which was better. A 2007 FJ Cruiser or a 2008 FJ Cruiser.

In this field test both have the same engine, A-Trac and rear differential lock.

RINPOCHE and UPHILL decided to see which would come out on top today. RINPOCHE was talking smack about how a brick colored 2008 FJ was the ultimate and could kick the butt of a tired old titanium 2007 FJ. The gauntlet once tossed, had to be picked up.

The first stop was Quartz Hill where RINPOCHE drove to the summit in the SCORPION, not wanting to scratch his 2008 Brick FJ.

SCORPION is ready for the first test.

Can the Rinpoche Ride take the first serious obstacle?

It looks like the stock 08 is struggling.

MISSRINPOCHE struggles out of the way of the high-centered 2008 FJ.

There was a recovery strap tossed and pulled (no photos, but the tired old 2007 FJ managed to save the new stock FJ)

The next challenge was a short but enjoyable ride. The road dropped steeply into narrow Jacoby Canyon on a hard-pack snow/ice road then wound its way back to Highway 18 (and Cactus Flats). On the way out, there are several boulder outcroppings... And blocking the road was a broken down LAND ROVER.

The Land Rover's engine was kaput and the road was very slick. Time for the old venerable 2007 FJ to step up to the plate again. Happy to tow the Land Rover out of the canyon. We couldn't get past him since he broke down, blocking the road anyway.

AFTERMATH:worried:

2008 FJ - Stock, pretty, but needs some mods to keep up with the old worn out 2007 FJ:up_to_something:

Uphill, Poker Dawg let's do it. It would be great to run with you and Poker Dawg again. We had alot of fun on the Mojave road. Sign us up. I'll bring the fireworks. I vote for stickers. Poker Dawg, are you going to do the itinerary? I vote for at least Pleasant - South Park canyons loop. Very beautiful.
I just got a Canon 20D-hopefully to take pics of the quality of Poker Dawg.
Come on Woodsman take a few days off and meet up with us.

Oh, I turn to Uphill's expertise. I just asked him if he would take us :D Once I'm sure I can go, I'd be glad to help in planning. So far it looks good for me.

If I go, we can talk more about your 20D. It's a great camera.

Thanks for doing this Larry.

Re: Meet the Scorpion (Uphill's Build-Up)

The tail light guards are gone.

I need a new set.

When I first got them, everyone teased me about adding bling. Nothing could be further from the truth. Five tail light saves later, the R/R came apart when WRIGMAN and I pulled it off the FJC. It had been holding the broken lens in place for months now. (The lens came apart once the guard was removed)

The L/R is just too beat up from the Martinez Canyon AZ run, with about 1/4 inch of steel sanded from the edges it's starting to rust and it's bent on top of that. So adding a new one on the right and leaving the left looking like piece of twisted, rusting junk makes no sense.

Tail light guars are not bling IMO.

Do you have a certain brand in mind? I believe cruiserlarry has the Maniks in stock for $189.95.
