That's right, the TRANS-AMERICA TRAIL !!!

Why YES. YES I have. And I also dream of doing it in my 4 x 4 pretty much every day.

"The Trans-America Trail is a west bound ride across America. The Trail starts in Southeastern Tennessee, and ends at the Pacific Ocean in southwestern Oregon. Some 4,800 miles of mostly off-pavement riding."

"Hi, I'm Sam Correro. For years I passionately pursued my goal of charting a coast-to-coast, off-pavement motorcycle adventure. I studied reams of maps and surveyed thousands of miles to create what I believe is one great trip. Over time, I began to realize that a lot of people share my interests."

It should be noted that the majority of the route can be made in a 4 x 4.

So, this brings me to the question . . . Has anyone on here done the trail either on a motorcycle or in a 4 x 4 ? :lookaround:

Would I do it this year ? I don't know. I already have ten weeks or more of possible plans for this year so the stars would have to align perfectly in order to fit this in. However, it might be possible to do part of it going out to Cruise Moab or the FJ Summit and then knock out the western portion at a later date. Am I serious ? HELL YES ! We only go around once ! :rocker:

Again, Has anyone on here done the trail either on a motorcycle or in a 4 x 4 ? :lookaround:

I've been on some of the Utah stretch and that is an awesome sounding Trek!

I realize that this route may not pass through some of the very prettiest, most grand parts of the country or the biggest tourist attractions but what is most appealing to me is seeing "the heartland", skipping the big cities and passing through "real America". . . just traveling through small towns of good people and farms and forests all day long. You can stop and see all the touristy crap on the way home. :lol:

Other than the fact that the maps were created for east to west travel, I wonder why he seems so adamant about not going west to east.

How many miles should I plan to ride each day?

Woodsman! I've been wanting to do this for a very long time!

I emailed Sam, the fella who made the maps, and he said there are some areas around Utah that probably aren't wide enough for a 4x4 but that there are plenty of bypass routes. Anyway, besides that I thought it would be a great trip.

What kind of time-line are you looking at? I imagine it would take a few weeks minimum. Either way, count me in for at least a portion of it when you decide to go. I will do everything in my power to reserve some time for this! Truly one of the last great American off-road expeditions!

I don't have any time line at this point. Just thinking out loud and researching. Thanks for making the call. I had read that same thing somewhere or maybe it was something I got back from the Land Cruiser guy when corresponding about it.

If it is really 4800 miles, then at 200 miles a day you're talking 24 days just going west. Now, in a 4x4 you could certainly stand to cover more miles than on a bike but I certainly would not want to cover 400 miles a day. That would be easy on an interstate of course but you would beat yourself and your vehicle to a pulp and not get to "stop and smell the roses" :hippy: or experience anything along the trail. I'm going to say three weeks minimum including getting back to the midwest.

That's a huge time commitment but it would be worth it to see the country from that perspective. I don't think I could disappear from life for that long but I could do like two weeks and see how far I could tag along!

I agree. I "could" do it all as one but it would be easier to do it maybe from Tennessee to Utah and do the Utah to the West coast part another time.

To this day, I still remember opening up my August 2004 issue of National Geographic Adventure and reading the story of a couple driving a new Jeep Rubicon from Canada to Mexico with much of it being off road. National Geographic Adventure Mag.: Canada-to-Mexico Dirt Road Trip

It was that article that got me to thinking about buying a vehicle and, after a few years and many, many visits to dealerships and auto shows to look at Jeeps, Land Rover Discoveries, and Xterras . . . I purchased an FJ Cruiser.

There was another similar article in the April 2007 issue. Road Trip: Canada to Mexico - National Geographic Adventure Magazine

I am just as much if not more interested in a Canada to Mexico or Mexico to Canada trip and could easily see doing this trip multiple times, maybe once up thru Cali, Oregon, and Wash, once up through AZ, NV and ID and so on. That would be far fewer miles and no less exciting.

I need to start researching those NORTH - SOUTH routes. Stuff takes alot of keyboard time. :lol: Wish I were getting paid for this. :lookaround:

Call it a mid-life thing. :silly:

I've been thinking alot as of late of all the things I've said to myself that I wanted to experience, attempt or learn how to do and I decided that you only get one go-around. I'm willing to sacrifice some late life confort for some fun right now. Started the year out with skiing, snowshoeing, ice climbing and snowmobiling. Add in a nice used dirt bike for some trail and sand dune fun. Maybe mix in some whitewater kayaking instruction, plenty of mountain biking, whitewater rafting, dune surfing, skydiving, ride in a WWII fighter, Dusy Ershim trail, Pismo, and as much other trail time as I can fit in . . . to 2013 that is. We'll see how it goes. At least if I don't make squat this year my taxes will be lower . . . unless Obama has anything to say about it. :rofl: :mecry:

Woodsman, this is an epic trail and the adventure motorbike crowd has know about this for quite some time... Never done in one rip but I know a crew that did it in two trips on big dual sport motorbikes... Lots of planning and extensive equipment transportation

I would love to do on bike but would settle with a 4x4 run... The older I get the more I realize it's a young carefree mans sport

Thanks and, yes, I am familiar with ADV. Bikes would be awesome but 4 x 4 is my mode for now. I have thought often about the Kawasaki 650 dual sport as it seems to be a widely accepted and reliable platform these days. The BMWs are uber awesome but just too much coin. My Kawi 450 is so light I can easily carry on a hitch carrier with the FJ ( I could bring it along) whereas a 650 is about 200 lbs heavier.
