On a previous FJ (214,000mi) I had the transmission shudder and used ATP Automotive AT-222 as a mechanic reccomended. After a few miles I never had the shudder again. (15,000+ miles later)

I had the shudder, and had it flushed, no help. I added 4 oz. of Dr.Tranny and it hasn't come back in 12K miles.

I have a 2007 with a rear shudder. Is that transmission? Someone stated that was common with the 07's. Do newer models fit as replacements? Any ideas are appreciated.
It's actually the torque converter, which is often reduced or fixed by changing out the transmission fluid. There is debate whether to do it slowly via 4-5 drain and fill cycles (when you drain, only about 1/4th) of the fluid comes out, or going all in and having Toyota or another shop flush the entire system all at once.

Also, Lubeguard ShudderFixx has been known to work wonders. It's not isolated to FJ's, I believe 4Runners and Tacoma's suffer the same issue.

no flush.. 3-5 drain and fills
no don't flush,, drain, new filter refill and repeat if shudder still there. i had issue and drained replaced filter and fluid and was good to go.... i would really do the filter, mine was pretty dirty and don't think drain and fill only would have helped...

It is good to known. Thank You
Its like the rear gear is slipping. Sometimes If I am light on the gas and going up hill will slip or shudder. Press the gas and it pulls out.
Well I ordered the Lubeguard Shudderfixx and received (6) 2 oz tubes and no instructions. I am assuming to add one tube drive for a week or so and add until it is resolved.

I put in 2 tubes (4oz.) in January 2022 and problem is gone for over a year. The fill plug is not easy to find but I was pleasantly surprised that it came right out. I used a big syringe like tool, from amazon, to insert it.

2011 FJ here. I started getting the shudder at just under 139k miles. After reading the MANY threads in this issue here, I went to the dealer for a complete flush (not a drain and fill). The tranny has settled back down about 95% with 2k miles after the flush, and I'm hoping for a little more. In any case, much improved and no shifting ossues. I wish Toyota would just say how often this should be done as routine maintenance, and not just for extreme driving conditions. I'll be doing it every 100k from now on (fingers crossed to make it that far).

Unfortunately, the owners manuals seem to be written for only about the first 100k miles.

The million mile Tundras (more than one) used 30~50k mile intervals to change fluids, after the first 100k.

If you want to extract the absolute maximum life from your transmission, I'd perform a flush every 50-60K miles, and not wait for 100K.

There isn't a fine particulate filter in this transmission, and all the clutch wear debris just circulates perpetually, wearing out O-rings and seals in the valve body. The less debris there is suspended in the ATF, the slower all the soft seals wear.
