Trd Cai dropped my mpg *problem solved*

**Nevermind problem solved** Make sure to reset your "SCAN GAUGE" if you have one, after the install of your CAI. Apparently the Scangauge goes back to default engine size of 3.0 setting. I didn't know this.**

(Okay I finally got a chance to installed my TRD CAI, got the the power I wanted, got the roar I wanted, but didn't get the mileage I wanted. :mecry: WTF according to my Scangauge I'm dropped down from 18.9 mpg, to 10mpg. Driving habits were kept the same, still driving 65mph. Am I missing something? or is my Scan Gauge wrong?)

I cant see a CIA dropping your MPG 8.9 MPG. Try the old fashioned way, fill it, zero out a trip meter and drive to fill and divide miles by gallons. Even if you drive around with your foot in it (only way you get that sound) I cant see that kind of a loss.
Did you bump your MAF sensor or maybe get it dirty at any point? Those things can be a tad delicate if you happen to get one dirty.... You might want to try taking it out and cleaning it.....But if it were fouled I would think you would feel it at idle. My old Taco would act foolish at idle when the MAF got dirty....The FJ may not be the same.....Worth a try. Might be worth a try if the filter were oiled also....
What Mtb Coach said...
you are missing something or your scangage is wrong...Or you gunked up your maf sensor which would definitly drop your MPG's. As stated already, Try to manually track your MPG's and if it's still bad, clean your maf sensor with Maf sensor cleaner, DO NOT TOUCH IT WITH AMYTHING only spray cleaner. you can also use electronics contact cleaner.
My theory is that new sound from the CAI makes it hard to stay off the gas. I know that when I installed a sweet set of 2-1 pipes on my H-D, my first gas tank I dropped ~5 mpg because I just loved the sound of them when being opened up.

In reality, it is probably a bit of both being a little more happy with the right foot and having a set up issue with the Scangauge or MAF sensor...
I took care not mess up the MAF sensor, so I doubt its that but I'll have check it anyways. I'll calculate the mileage the old fashion way, just to see if I actually dropped.

Man, I was so proud about my 23.2 mpg I got the first two tanks, I guess I bragged about it to much and Karma caught up to me and nailed me with the addition of the CAI. Anyways thanks for the advice fella's.
Did you reset everything after the install? Ron

even with all the mods on my solara, my cai improved my mileage on the interstate about 3-4 mpg. I'm running a boosted 3.0 and still getting 27mpg at 75 mph, with a 2.75 inch cai. you could have fouled the maf, i would check that first. I don't know about you, but my scangauge is very unreliable for MPG, break out the calculator and fill it all the way up so you know your mileage for sure. coach is also right, you know how hard it is to stay out of the throttle once you install that mean sounding intake...I went through a stage like that too with the solara, just couldn't keep out of the accelerator!

Owwww NO!! DOH!!! was I suppose to?
I don't really know for sure, but I would try it. It would be the easiest way to start over.. Disconnect the negative battery terminal over night and reset the Scanguage to default afterwards. I messed up my Scanguage one time on a roadtrip to Moab and my indicated MPG went to 1/2! Never could get it fixed until I "reset to defaults" and started over. Good Luck.. Ron

Well I did remove the negative battery terminal as the instructions stated. I'll reset the scan gauge and see if that fixes the probelm.
Okay, went out to the FJ and reset the ScanGauge. Turns out it was reading 3.0 size engine, I think thats the default setting. This should solve the problem.

I love this forum, it took less than ten minutes to solve a problem. Thanks everybody
Yep... It'll be happier now.. Oh.. what he said about the compass. I'm lucky and live in the only house on a cul de sac...LOL.. It just looks like I forgot something and went back home.. Ron

Let us know what your mileage is now. "Fuel Savings" may be just the excuse I need... LOL!
