I just got my Vehicle Dependent Expedition Guide by Tom Sheppard. What a FANTASTIC book! I have read that Internet copies are going for over $370.00 for the first additions, they are VERY hard to come by, now I know why.

This has to be the BEST one source for everything you ever wanted to know about outfitting, planning, shipping vehicles, load distribution, GPS, clothing, indigenous populations, vehicle recovery, etc. WAY to much to put here. Tom decided to make one more printing along with some updates from the first edition. I purchased mine for $130.00 from Expedition Portal. For those of you want the complete guide for Expeditions, this is the book to get.

Tom Sheppard, an ex Royal Air Force test pilot, has accumulated over 100,000 desert and overland miles over the past 40 years or more. He led the Expedition to make the first cast to coast crossing of the Sahara, Atlantic to the Red Sea, for which he gained an award from the Royal Geographical Society. He has authored The Landrover Experience, Off-roader driving, Four-byfour driving and Quiet for a Tuesday, the story of one of the six solo Sahara expedtions he has conducted since 2001.

They will not last long, they are being bought up like crazy, people have been wanting this edition to come out for a very long time. I understand they will be going up in price to $170.00 here soon, get your copie while you can. I thought I would pass this on to those that would like to get a copy while you can. This is one of those books that you are always looking for at garage sales, thrift stores and such...
the original is a hard copy that is green...
the second printing was yellow if I remember right...
I pre-ordered this on expeditionportal.com as soon as it was mentioned (actually got 2, 1 for teaching out of, 1 for home use)...any of you interested in overland travel need to join that forum,,,
I would also recommend going to the Royel Geologic Society website and do some digging in the expeditions section for lots of downloadable pdf's that are parts of books. Tons of great info.
Lance this is the second edition printing that is on sale now. Scott says, it will be the last. The first editions were going for over $300 + on the net because everyone wanted one and were willing to pay for it. Tom decided to make one more edition to bring the cost down for people that wanted the information, this is it. :)

Even at $170.00 bucks, it is still way worth it. I spent sometime this morning paging through it, talk about covering everything. VERY detailed with pics diagrams, etc. Great book. :)

Actually this is 2.5 :)
He mentions in the forward/preface part about this being an improved reprinting but not quite enough for a new edition :)
I have seen the first and second printings and it is something you always want to keep your eye out for .....
Having read it before I know I will wear out my new copy rereading and looking for changes.

make sure all of you check out the RGS site for more cool stuff you can download for free.
Yep, your right Lance :)

I'll have to check out the RGS too, thanks

See ya in Ouray :)

Let's not make new threads on the same topic, this way we are able to keep the Fourm from clutter, thanks :)
