Trail Damage - Broken Hi-lift Jack

Yes, apparently you can break these babies.

While I was driving through a really tight area in Truckhaven (Anza Borrego State Park, CA), I hit the base end of the jack into an overhang, and it just bent the cross beam right over.

These Fourtreks mounts are super strong (stronger than the jack anyway).

I am told I can buy just a replacement beam for the jack and I'll be back in business.

Maybe I'll put it back up on the rack again, but it was so noisy up there.

Thanks Jesse, it was great meeting you as well.

Can you give me the name of those gas cans again?

Also, I would love to see the video you took on the trail.

Let's go wheeling together soon.

You're so close we should put some runs together...

M-Pac Barrier installed

My Barrier was not fitting just right , but after reading about the issue here on the forum, drilling and elongating the mounting bracket holes about 1/2" to the right, and a squirt of black paint, everything is right with the world.

The fit is now perfect (even custom ).

Here are a couple of shots of it installed.

Even fits with a Tuffy Box -

Perfect fit left... (those are my Pico chairs bungeed to the side - I replaced the hooks with the tie downs that came out of the back when the Tuffy Box went in).

and right. (that is a small molle bag I got from 511 Tactical that holds bungees).

The view from the other side.

Thanks for sharing the Borrego pics. I'm looking forward to exploring the area. The picture of the hi-lift bending while being held by ARB and FourTreks really gave testament to how strong those 2 products are. I'm glad nothing else suffered damage.

Vince tell me more about your Pico chairs, I like how compact they seem to be. Are they comfortable? What is the pack size dim also? thanks buddy

Hey Mike, yeah the Pico chairs are very nice.

They are comfortable, however they don't recline at all like the ones we had been using.

The folded size is the big advantage to me, 12" tall x 20" wide x 4" deep.

I can keep the 2 chairs secured in the rig all the time.

They are a little pricey, but worth it IMHO.

How I bent my Hi-Lift Jack

Basically I followed FJ-Ollie through "The Arch" out in Truckhaven during BorregoFest '08.

The Arch is a short little side route that is very tight and twists to the right and then the left before letting you out.

FJ-Ollie suggested (and he was right) that we remove our snorkel heads before trying this (he knew this from previous experience).

Thanks to Scott (gon2surf) for these great photos (and the "spot" as well).

Heading in and under (the jack is being bent as this photo is taken)...

My jack is all ready bent as I go through the arch (look at the position of the jack handle)...

Coming out (you can again see that my snorkel head has been removed). You can also really see the point of contact on the jack base (upper outside edge) and the dirt that landed on the ARB bumper when it came into contact with the side wall...

You can see here that the plastic "keeper" just parted under the pressure...

The ARB bumper and the Fourtreks Mounts are obviously very strong.

I went online and ordered a new 60" beam ($25 shipped) from Hi-Lift (all their spare parts are sold from an ebay site now).

I'm glad I followed Ollie through the Arch, but I don't think I need to do it again.

Joshua Tree - Brooklyn Mine Trail Run

December 7th, 2008

We had a nice day out on the trail in Joshua Tree National Park.

13 rigs met up at the visitors center at 9:30 am, and we headed out to the trailhead.

Airing down at the trailhead -

Striking out -

A beautiful day in the desert -

The trail got a little dicey in more than a few places -

Lunch time -

It was nice and cool all day, and we got a few sprinkles at lunchtime -

Line up along the trail -

Major intersection -

Al managed to find some mud -

My rig -

A nice little cactus -

We did have one flat tire, but other than that, no major issues to report -

Airing back up for the ride home -
