Wheeler Pass is a really interesting side-trip if you have a good part of the day to spend. The entire loop takes about 4 to 5 hours from Las Vegas, returning back to Las Vegas. This road/trail will take you from highway 95 north of Las Vegas to Pahrump Nevada where you can grab a nice lunch and some libations at one of the small casinos in town, and then head down highway 160 (Blue Diamond Parkway) to connect to the 15 freeway near the Silverton Hotel and Casino.

I didn’t take a huge amount of photos, so now you can go and take them for yourself. While the valley was nearing 95 degrees, this area was green and much cooler at 80 degrees. Much of the trail was easy, but there are some challenging parts. I don’t think anything was on the level of Coyote Creek near Anza Borrego, but there were some rocks, and some places where proper wheel placement was very valuable.

The trail starts off of Highway 95 near the prison, at a turnoff called Cold-creek. Pass the prison, and after a while on a paved road, there is a turn out to the right for the trail. However if you go straight ahead you can check out the town of cold-creek. Apparently there is not gas or electric here, so all the homes are solar or propane powered.

The main road is pretty nice.

The dirt roads/trails are moderately well marked, but I didn’t have a map showing them so at one point I ended up on a more challenging part, whereas there was an easier way down that I missed. This photo was part way up, before the more challenging parts of the trail. That’s Mrs. FJsRKool in the photo.

Another view from the same spot; the road was very easy here.

A little higher up the pass the trail got just a little rougher, but still wasn’t too bad.

Very green up here at about 4 to 5000 ft elevation.

At the Summit of the pass

Some other trails would take you higher up

At this point I missed the turn for the easy trail down the back side of the mountain, and although I had a great time following this trail for about 2 miles, not everyone would enjoy this.

The trail smoothed out quite a bit further down the pass.

A little left-over dust from the trip.

That looks like a nice way to spend a day. I love Nevada...dust, rocks, heat...what's not to like? :) Driving around in the high desert just seems right. I don't get down there near enough.

Thanks for the pics!

We always have a blast any time we hit the dirt in Nevada. This was my favorite so far. On this same trip we also visited a spring in an area called Lovell Canyon on the way back from Pahrump to Las Vegas. It was about 3 miles up a trail to a dead end then about a 200 ft walk.

My last thread was about the Jean to Blue Diamond run we did in December of 2007. It was fun too, but not as much as Wheeler.

A group of Vegas FJers are doing this trail on Tuesday the 24th. If anyone is in town and wants to tag along, reply and I'll send you a link to the meeting place and time.

Anytime someone is in Vegas and wants to do some trail riding post it up. There tons of great trails we can show you.
