Yes a 16" wheel will give you more sidewall.
If I understand correctly, you plan on only running these for certain events? If so, is money an issue? If it is, black steel wheels would be the wise choice. If money is not an issue, go with a true bead lock. If you plan on running these rims daily then a true bead lock may not be the best for you (depending on your driving habits). If your looking at a street lock, Mike (ShadowWarrior) is running 16 Mickey Thompson Classic Locks. I am running the same rim in 17". The only complaint I have on the rim itself is cleaning them after wheeling. It's a major pain in the butt. I have got to the point of removing them before I wheel and putting them back on afterwards. I scratched the hell out of the ring one day when I curbed them, lol.
