When/why should you replace the front upper and lower control arms?

I have a 2007 FJ 4x4 Auto with 300,000km (180,000 miles) I've replaced the front axles (torn boots), wheel bearings (one was grinding), and sway bar links/bushings (clunking). Everything is now tight up front. I have some new struts to install this fall, should I be replacing the original UCA and LCA while I'm there? Or can I wait until they show signs of wear? Currently everything seems tight with no play. I'm worried about catastrophic failure while driving down the road. Is catastrophic failure a thing for these?

It can be, but its typically when they are kept on lifted trucks, as it puts the ball joint out of its range, and can sort of pry itself apart in that situation.

If you are stock height still, and all is good and tight, then they are fine and continuing to do their job.

If you are lifting or leveling the front, then its best to replace them with higher caster aftermarket units.
Are we talking upper or lower control arms?

Either ones. I saw on A1 Auto that they replaced uppers but kept the lowers. I'm at sgtock height with no plans on lifting the FJ.
I replaced the uppers when i lifted years ago. The lowers had to be replaced recently because the cam bolts were frozen solid. Replaced the bolts with SPC.

My lowers bushings got so bad that it couldn`t be aligned anymore. Thats when I changed them. I replaced the uppers when I got Kings coilovers so I had more room :)

Your lower control arms will “let you know” what they need when it’s time. if you’re not lifted or planning to be, and your uppers are wearing out I’m sure you could buy (or get free) a pair of gently used uppers from someone on here and just pay shipping. OE equipment is usually very high quality and lasts longer than most aftermarket parts.
