My wife curbed a tire and took a nice chunk out of it (Showing steel), and has another tire witha chunk of tred missing not as bad. We have been talking about want to put a 3" lift on it for her Birthday (Nov.) But she needs new Tires now..

Could we get 4 new 295x70x17 Tires to put on the FJ now.. or would the truck need to be lifted for the tires to fit?

How much bigger is a 295 than the 265 that is currently on the truck

Even with a lift, you would most likely have to do the "body mount chop" to fit that size tire. Much of that depends on the profile of the tire and the wheels you are putting the tires on.

According to the tire calculator, you would be going from a tire that is ~ 31.6" to a ~33.26" tire that is also more than an 1.2" wider, which is usually the biggest issue with clearing the body mount as well as the UCA...

depends on tires, wheels, etc....

I have 295x70x17 Nitto Terra Grapplers on the stock alloy 17" wheels....

Tires alone fit fine but rubbed going into driveway and when offroading on the body mount...wearing through rubber on drivers side within 3 days.

Added ToyTec OME 3" lift with medium OME springs front and rear and kept my stock shocks all around.....with that I lost some travel in rear I am told. No rubbing of body mount by tires at all....my only rubbing issue is the UCA on passenger side gets rubbed slightly by tire sidewall. I never hear anything...but notice a shiny spot after offroading that goes rusty while on highway only.

The 295x70x17s are 34" tires....where as the 265 tires are 31" tires...so about a full three inces...but again it is dependent on profile of tire, aggressiveness of tread lugs, manufacturer, etc.

So you should be able to go that size all things being equal...but not really much difference offroad between the 285 and the 295...so might go with 285 in hopes of avoiding some of the UCA rubbing from sidewall.....and now Nitto makes a 285x75x17 which is offered by our sponsor here Discount Tire Direct.....which gives you a narrower tire. These are like 33.85 inches tall so dont lose much but get narrower tire while may not look as tough are actually better due to them fitting wheel well better.

That is the tire I would go with if doing it all over again and sticking with an all terrain.......Nitto makes a great tire...and this size is in my opinion the best option for us especially if you do not want to do the body mount chop.

I am body mount chop free still... Good luck on new tires

With all due respect, every tire size calculator I use comes up the same - 33.26". As you stated, that can vary greatly with each tire manufacturer but it would be a stretch to get them to a true 34" tire.

He would be going to ~1.66" larger tire, using the tire calculator's sizing of 31.6 to 33.26".

In either event, we are in agreement that in a stock set up, he will more than likely damage his tires and even with an OME lift, probably rub on the UCA's at some point, depending on his usage...

maybe check out the narrower tire from Nitto that is 285x75x17......same basic appearance but enough extra clearance to likely clear UCA and body mount....or just get a more aggressive 265 series tire.
