I have been shopping winches for some time now. Can anyone give me a reason NOT to buy a Smittybuilt XRC10 Comp. Series 10,000 # winch???
I know these are Chinese made. But they are getting better in their copying. I won't be using the thing everyday, hopefully.
Now I just read that there is a $50.00 mail-in rebate during March.

Let's here your comments, praises, gripes, or whatever you got....
Thanks for the imput,

You might want to check with Smittybuilt to see if the XRC10 is available. I was looking at that about 2 months ago and found out when I called Smittybuilt that the XRC10 wasn't available and was put back into development to fix a problem with the plumbing. The tech support guy I was talking to said it may be 4-6 months befeore they're producing them again. That might have changed though.

I have a Gorilla winch 12,0000 that I have used at least 50 times and it still works fine. It came with my jeep when I bought it. Its slow but is remote or cable and I have saved a lot of stranded off the HWY in a snow bank people including myself in mud 3/4 up on 35" tires. Hasn't failed me yet.
A slow winch is better than NO winch:)

I would love to have a warn 9.5 detachable 2" hitch mount but until this one breaks whats the point?

I know it doesn't answer your question, but when the day, and money, comes I think I will be getting a Viper Elite 12000. I actually want to say they are a supporting vendor now?

I'd like to be able to say I'd recommend a Viper Elite 12000 but that deal fell through for me. I was talking to Peter K. from Moto Alliance via email, getting measurements to make sure it was going to fit in my bumper, we were about to make a deal on the Elite 12000 when he just stopped communicating with me. No reason, no explanation. Tried several times to contact him, he wouldn't return my emails, I even called the company. Nothing. WTF ... so I gave up.

I think when they are available, I'm going to get one of those Smittybilt XRC10HD Winches and put the Warn 9.5i back onto my Jeep where it belongs. My Jeep already has on-board air and I could definitely us an air compressor on the FJ. I called a spokesperson from Smittybilt and said that the XRC 10 HD winch is currently unavailable and is back onto the development table to correct some issues with the compressor's plumbing. According to the spokesperson, Smittybilt is now part of Procomp and as many as 150 products are being redesigned by engineers in order to make improvements on these product lines. The Smittybilt XRC10HD is one of those products back in re-development. Smittybilt plans to re-release the XRC10HD but there is no definitive release date set, however Smittybilt says that they do plan to do so in the future. So the Smittybilt XRC 10 HD winch is not dead, just delayed.

You could check with Stan @ Toy outfitters, they are a dealer, a member here and a supporting vendor.

I've liked my XRC8 so far. I've had opportunity to use it maybe 4 times since I got it last spring. Pulls well on the first two wraps and has been real sweet for maintenance (none needed). I have not used it in cold weather so I can't speak for that issue. Price was right as well.

If the XRC10 behaves the same I'd say go for it.

I don't know if it matters, but you said Smittybuilt was bought by Procomp, procomp is owned by 4wheelparts.

I haven't heard that. But according to the Smittybilt guy I talked to, Procomp is re-engineering as many as 150 products that they acquired from the Smittybilt product line. I think it comes down to what sub-company does the design engineering. I doubt 4wheelparts does any engineering. 4wheelparts seems to me to be a retail outlet that does extremely well and can buy out other companies if that's the case. Similarly the company I work for has a % interest in two other companies. Our engineers examined many of the products from these other companies and re-thought the design to make it better. Same thing I think. I think the Smittybilt had problems with the air system and they needed to fix it rather than send it out potentially defective. Unless Warn is suing them for stealing the design concept (winch/air). There may have been patent infringement going on. But I'm speculating on that.

Interesting. I bought my XRC8 at 4WheelParts, in a pinch when my Warn made Tabor died, for a real sweet price. This ownership deal you speak of could explain why. We have one of their warehouses in Jacksonville up by the airport. Just walking into that place makes me want to spend large volumes of cubic dinero. Wifey says she has to hold my wallet whenever we visit the place.

I'm not saying it's a fact, all I know is last year, I had ordered a set of Procomp Series 87 steelies from Summit Racing, and waited, and waited, and waited. It kept getting back ordered. So, after like, 2 months of "it should be in soon" I canceled my order. I did some price checking and 4wheelparts had the wheels, and they were actually a little cheaper, just by a couple of bucks. The first time around I chose Summit Racing because I had heard horror stories about ordering from 4wheelparts. But since I was in a pinch I decided to try them out. Called them up, spoke to one of their reps, he was very nice, and over the course of the conversation he informed me that 4wheelparts owns procomp, and 4wheelparts only had something like 7 series 87 steelies nation wide at the moment. Five of them were in Jacksonville, I ordered them on a Friday, and if memory serves me, they arrived on Monday, Tuesday at the latest.
