Wiring Aftermarket Lights with Toyota FJ Cruiser Off Road Aux Switch

I have a Gobi Stealth rack with two sets of 1552 (PIAA 1500XT Driving) up front and one set of 1540 (1500XT Back up lamps) in the rear. I chose to do the no drill Gobi Light Install. These directions can be found around and I wont rehash them here. The purpose of this post is to show how to wire up aftermarked lights to the new Toyota FJ Cruiser Aux Light Switch. To start you need the FJ Aux Switch and the Pigtail Harness (if you dont want to solder direct to the switch). I got both of mine from Matt at TRDSOURCE.

Here is how to wire the switch. Holding the switch from the back (looking at the pins) with locking tabs on the right, I have numbered the pins top to bottom 1-6. Here is what they are:

Pin 1: Illumination Power for "Lights On" indicator light
Pin 2: Ground for Illumination circuit
Pin 3: Switch Power (taken from Marker Lamp Tap)
Pin 4: Line Out to Relay
Pin 5: Ground for Backlit Illumination Circuit
Pin 6: Illumination Power for Backlight

On the Harness side, cut the about 8" off the end (on the switch side). The colors are as follows:

Red with Blue Tracer: Pin 1
Black: Pin 2
Green with Purple Tracer: Pin 3
Red with Green Trace: Pin 4
Grey: Pin 5
Purple: Pin 6

Here is what I did. Essentially you want the switch backlit the under the same conditions you want to use your lights. For this I used RED wire in the picture and your marker light tap should be spliced to the purple AND green/purple trace wires. Now the relay feed wire and "Lights ON" illumination indicator will should both be powered when the switch is made. I used YELLOW wire for this in the picture. You need to connect the wire from your relay to the red/green wire and jump off it to the red/purple wire. Last are two grounds to the black and grey wires. You can either run a ground through the firewall or just find one under the dash.

The only thing you have to be careful of is the red/green trace wire. It looks like there is a diode shrink wrapped in line. I expect this is to prevent feeding power to the switch from the relay. If you swap the Pin 4 and Pin 3 wires it will not work since the 12V switch power that comes from the marker lamp tap wont get to the switch if you try to feed it through the red/green wire. So if you think you got it right make sure you didnt swap them.

Good luck
Jay

I have a question. Since the FJ already is wired for fog and aux lights, is it possible to use the Toyota wireing? There are places for the fuses and relays already in place. Could you buy the needed connections from Toyota and use those? It just seems a waste not to be able to use existing wireing.

Is this the correct pin configuration in this thread?
I'm trying to use this 6pin switch to work the fogs I have already installed.

Have you done a writeup? Please post a link if you have. If not, how about a list of parts number.
Thanks
I drilled and installed some 510's on my rack this weekend. While running the wiring I saw a harness insidde the A-pillar about 1/2 way up. Is it the other side of the wiring harness already pre wired for lights up top? K

Yes. I believe so.http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/foru...-free-freight-untill-05-31-07-pt278-35071.pdf This pdf is for the install of the factory roof lights.
so that switch has a built in relay i take it. weird that they didnt use 86-85-30-87a-87 for labeling.
Pic for pin order uploaded
I dont believe that there is a relay built in. you would still want to add one for any high powered accessories.

The switch does not have a relay built in and you should never use lights without a relay. You will either have to use the relay supplied with your aftermarket kit or do as colink did and use get the Toyota one and related fuses etc. I chose not to use the harness in the A pillar since I did the no drill method and end up with all wiring in the engine bay and I didnt feel like running all the wires back into the cab and then either buying the headliner harness and splicing into it or cutting off the connector and splicing into the wires there. If you drill through your roof, then colink's approach may indeed be easier, but you will need to get more parts than I had ready access to.

I didnt go your route, but I do have a questions since I did think seriously about going your way.

It looks like if you were going to install aftermarket lights then you would only need the switch, lamp harness, relay and fuse? I think the switch harness may be the same as the one that has one end in the center switch bank (connected to one of the blanks) and the other in the A Pillar. If that is the case you wouldnt need the switch harness only the lamp harness to splice your aftermarket lights into.

I also didnt use the method using the Toyota relay since I wasnt sure what its rating was and I am running two sets of PIAA 1500XT 1552 driving firing forward and another set of 1500XT Back up 1540 out back on a GObi Stelath rack. At 55W each, I was worried that these six lights would draw too much in comparison to the 2 Hella's that Toyota thinks you will be running up there. I am not sure if anyone has any light to shed here, but the combination of running 3 sets of lights and not drilling into the roof and coming down inside the A Pillar made me use the PIAA supplied relays.

Which factory wire did you tap to get the switch backlite when the headlights are turned on?
I think I tapped the green and green/white wires to get power for the backlight and powered lighting. I can't remember the order.

The Toyota aux lighting instructions references these wires and states to tap them, but does not indicate which one is which. I believe one is the ground.

Ok,
Has anyone confirmed the green and green/white wires for this center console OEM fog light switch install?

Green - backlight power

the green/white should be the ground
