After reading multiple threads I have become more confused than ever. Can someone just answer this? I have 265-70-17 tires on my stock wheels. I would like to know what are the biggest tires I can put on my FJ without modifications or new wheels.I would like to put a lift kit on, but that isn't going to happen anytime soon, if ever. So...any takers to this question?

There is no definitive answer to your question.
Every J is different, depending on factors ... such as
tyre manufacturer
vehicle weight
on road v off road and trails run...etc...
Alignment tech skill .... to push the UCA forward...
and other factors....

The simple answer is a 265/70 and you are safe.... no mods needed
Some have successfully run a 275/70 and even 285/70 with no mods....
others haven't.

so, sorry...no easy answer .... other than 265/70

I installed 285s and had the stock UCA for a while with no rubbing. But because I’d also put in a 3” lift, couldn’t get into alignment spec so swapped to an aftermarket UCA. If you are still stock I’m betting you can get away with an all terrain 285/70/17, and yes your stock wheels will be fine :smile

Not exactly your situation and probably more info than you wanted, ......

Stock wheels. Both Cooper Tires are load range E

Cooper AT3 LT275/70R17 3" lift (probably more like 2.5 ish with load) stock UCAs, no rub but unable to align. SPC UCAs aligned ok. Then Cooper LT285/70R17 rubbed at back of wheel well when backing up with steering hard over. BMC cured issue.

The 285's (STT Pro) are 33.03 diameter, The 275's (Discoverer AT3) are 32.17 diameter.

Alignment after the UCAs, Camber 0/0 (-0.15 +/- 0.75), Caster 2.8/2.9 (3.22 +/- 0.75)(+ on the RH side for road crown). Toe 1/16 or .005 (004-008). As @bazross said, "Alignment tech skill .... to push the UCA forward..." then 285s may not have rubbed. Never know now...

Got the alignment spec from a post by @FJX2000 (first part of post clipped)
