I'm not sure if anyone has started this but I think that we all would benefit and TOYOTA by knowing your build date for all of our members that have had a BROKEN REAR DIFF. Even better please let us know your third member build date that is stamped on the side of the third member near the E-locker.
this pic shows a org 3rd member buld date of 3/16/05
Here is a pic of a 3rd that was changed out after it blew.. Build date of 2/6/06[/quote]
and your Third Member's Build Date, with a description of what you were doing when the rear diff let go.
I'm obviously interested in finding out what build dates are at risk of a broken diff. Since mine is a 0906 build date with a 9-18-06 3rd member build date, I'm a bit worried that I might have a soft arse in my FJ. I mean soft as in it might break but seriously, as pointed out by fellow forum members the gears are breaking because they are to hard I guess, or now it appears problems with the castings. Plus, we can have this data on hand to print out or call up and show our SERVICE MANAGER at Toyota GOD forbid this happens to more of us loyal customers. Toyota should make good on their product and offer a recall or TSB on the rear diff if their and our data can prove there's a manufacturing defect with the materials used in the FJ's rear differential.
Build date...08/06...first time...driving home from tire shop...all gear teeth ground down....second time..pulling into Walmarts parking lot...three teath broke off the 8" gear.....the truck never let me sit...but it made some real bad noises...
I'm off road all the time and it breaks in town doing nothing!!!

Got it. Thanks. Ok I know there are others that had their butt go out. Please post up.
The noise did not start on the trail, rather on the way home. I believe the teeth can crack, and stay in place until you are at speed....then they fall off.
got front and rear replaced under warranty 06-07 (approx 22K miles on odo)

I don't have the build date, but I'm about VIN# 9,600 and had a broken 3rd ring gear. They replaced it and gave me a new rear locker, gears, and housing. The good thing is that the rear lower now works in 4-Hi.

Pretty sure I read that the new part number came on FJ's made since 2/07. Gets a new third ring gear and a new locker. Issue was the manufacturer, since changed.
