E brake issues after brake work.

Greetings:

Have 2007 fj. Changed front rotors pads and calipers. Changed rear pads and rotors. Lots of rust as vehicle from Alaska...

Used c clamp to compress pistons on rear...

Now, e brake doesn't work well. Don't know why with new rotor. Have done some reading and wonder if I messed something up by using c clamp. I also didn't open bleeder on passenger rear as rusty and didn't want to break.

E brake sort of works but rolls on hill.

I have new calipers and mounts but old ones seemed OK and expanded and compressed and I'm not a mechanic and couldn't figure out how brake hose disconnects from caliper as no fitting for wrench on the rear by caliper on black hose. ....

Any insights appreciated in advance!

the e-brake is mechanical. the caliper has nothing to do with it. you probably just need to adjust the shoes a bit. with fresh rotors there is probably not enough rust induced friction to hold them.

there should be an oval slot with a rubber plug on the inner cover. there will be a star wheel inside that you can catch with a screwdriver and turn to tighten or loosen the fit. i do it with the tires off the ground in neutral (front wheels chocked, e-brake released) and tighten them until i feel some drag turning the wheel by hand, then back it off just until it spins freely.

"Rust on parking brake drum' isn't required to make the parking brake function correctly.

Clean (not oil contaminated) brake shoe friction material and clean drum surfaces are required, as well as correct shoe>drum clearance and correct brake lever cable adjustment.

If the brakes were badly rusted, you may have to disassemble, clean and lube the parking brake component parts, especially the threaded star-wheel adjuster mechanism. If this is seized or doesn't turn easily, you won't be able to set shoe>drum clearance. After tightening the adjuster just to the point where the disk/drum locks, back off the adjuster 8 clicks.

My 2013 FJ is missing the hole plug on both back rotors. Possibly they were removed early on when Toyota adjusted the parking brake under warranty about 6 months after I bought the FJ new.

I've been searching for a part number for the plug but can't seem to come up with it. Does anyone know the part number for the rubber plug for the brake rotor?

this looks like it:
Thank you for finding that.
This looks like the typical parking brake adjuster plug on most Toyotas, but the link above does say "This does not fit your FJ cruiser" and FJs aren't in the list of 2267 applicable Toyota model variants. I'm going to a Toyota dealer today. Hopefully they can confirm if this is the part or look up what part number it actually is, if the FJ is different.
