Hello,

My rear tweeters in my 2007, FJammer + factory subwoofer FJ have blown and I'm looking for factory spec replacements, not upgrades.

I have attempted to buy 6160-35280 and 6160-35290 (left and right rear tweeters) from some online Toyota OEM parts retailers, but they are all discontinued. I'm looking for OEM spec (or even better, OEM) tweeters to replace the broken ones because I am soon going to be installing the OEM Audio+ package front/door speakers and dont want anything more powerful than the stock tweeters in the back.. However something is better than nothing.

Anyone have a lead on OEM rear tweeters for a fair price.. Or just plug and play OEM spec aftermarket rear tweeters?

Thanks!

I replaced mine with these… hop on Crutchfield.com, great resource. 👍

86160-35280/90 are 8 ohm, 65mm diameter tweeters (total outside diameter 70mm, or ~2.75"), with a 4.7mF capacitor on the negative wire to cut frequencies below 190Hz. Their efficiency is 82dB/Wm.

If you use 4ohm in their place the new ones will be louder, which you can control with the rear fader.

Since they aren't the main drivers in the system the increased load on your head unit's amp will probably be ok. If you get distortion at the volume you want you can add an audio grade resistor in line with the red wire. If there is no distortion at your normal listening levels then the amp is fine with it.

If you do replace with new speakers that are half the impedance but also are lower efficiency than 82dB you might not even be able to hear a difference. If they are much higher efficiency, like into the 90s, they might be much louder.

So long as the amp doesn't clip, you can manage any sound difference with either the fader or adding a resistor (that's what I did when I replaced the 8ohm dash speakers with 4ohm aftermarket ones that were simply too loud. In the front I can't just use the fader because they are in parallel with the door speakers. Bought a pair of ceramic, 20W, 4ohm resistors to use in series. That took the edge off (that, and using a proper equalizer to cut the annoying frequencies around 2k, 2.5k, 3.15k and 4k, which I learned from a talk by Dave Natale, sound engineer for the Rolling Stones on how he made their concerts more enjoyable).

:)

I’ve never looked at my rear tweeters, are they the same as the front dash tweeters? I replaced my front tweeters with the DS18 that drop right in. You could buy a set for the front, and swap your current OEM tweeters for the rear. The DS18 are a nice smooth tweeter, they’re not harsh like a titanium tweeter, yet they sound delicate. And the price is low for the sound quality that they reproduce. My main concern is that the OEM Audio+ upgrade replaces the front speakers and tweeters with lower impedance speakers as well, so I didnt want to overload the stock head unit with additional lower impedance rear tweeters. Here's the specs on those:

FRONT 1″ SOFT DOME TWEETERS
  • Silk soft dome
  • 4-ohms
  • 50W RMS (100 Peak)
  • Sensitivity 91.8 dB (1 W,1M)
  • Frequency Response: 3,000-20,000 Hz
  • Built-in 6db/Oct. High Pass Filter
FRONT 6″ X 9″ WOOFERS
  • Carbon Fiber Cone Woofer
  • 2-ohms
  • 50W RMS (100 Peak)
  • Sensitivity 90.2 dB (1 W,1M)
  • Frequency Response: 50-12,000 Hz
---------------------------------

I do have a pair of Kenwood Excelon KFC-X2C that will fit in the front or back tweeter locations, but I didnt want to install them in the back while I also had the OEM Audio+ speakers installed.. Just because I didnt want to overheat the head unit.
  • handles up to 50 watts RMS (120 watts peak power)
  • frequency range: 800-20,000 Hz
  • sensitivity: 83 dB
  • impedance: 4 ohms

I ran those DS18 in the front for over two years on my FJammer stereo without any issues before I recently upgraded to an Android head unit. I also like my music loud and clear, so I don’t think you’ll run into any problems if you upgrade the front. The DS18 are a high sensitivity tweeter( 98db claimed )so they need less power to get more volume..which was one of the reasons I picked them.

Thanks for asking this question. I too have OEM Audio+ installed in my FJ, but never thought about the rear tweeters. Have you considered a solution yet?

I think the safest thing would to just replace the broken OEM tweeters with other OEM ones. If I had a stronger aftermarket head unit I'd definitely be upgrading them to 0hm ones.. But with the Audio Plus upgrade, I don't want to risk it

I was the same as you..I wanted to keep my factory FJammer stereo stock, even though I’m an audio/home theatre lover. I recently decided to install an Android head unit in my FJ and I’m SO glad that I did, it was the best $200 bucks I’ve spent, and the sound quality upgrade was tremendous. My FJammer didn’t have the subwoofer option, but it now sounds like it does..I wasn’t expecting such a dramatic improvement in the sound. I’ve never spent so little, to get this high of a quality of sound, I think I’ve only spent $300CDN dollars for the front tweeters and deck. I’ve spent more on just tweeters, many times in the past back in my car audio days. Now this isn’t as loud as my past systems, but the sound quality and imaging, the way the midbass hits, beats most of my previous systems, except in SPL.

It may be cheaper to bite the bullet, and maybe consider an Android, it‘s a good way to modernize your FJ with some useful tech like wireless Apple CarPlay and Android auto. These new units make it really easy to install, and programming the steering wheel controls is a breeze. Good luck with whatever route you decide to take!

Which model did you go with? I would actually like something that has pretty good Bluetooth and Android auto would be nice. I actually really like the stock radio for the FJ Cruiser though, because having that nice big volume button is nice to have

Man this is hilarious, I wanted to keep the FJammer for the same reason as you..the chunky volume knob🤣. I honestly don’t miss it at all. Here is a link to the Android unit I bought, it was listed for $119.00USD, but I believe they made a mistake on the price as it’s been “unavailable” since the morning after I bought mine( there was 12 available at 2am the night I bought mine, and the next morning they were unavailable )

[6G+128G] Hikity Android 13 Car Stereo for Toyota FJ Cruiser 2007-2018, 9 Inch 1280x720 Touchscreen Radio with Wireless Carplay Android Auto DSP GPS BT FM RDS Backup Camera https://a.co/d/0pg8TK1

It was all plug and play, steering wheel controls are super easy to program, wiring harnesses make instal a breeze, mic, super clear AHD reverse camera, GPS antenna and black FJ fascia to fit the 9” screen( some of the holes on the fascia required some enlarging to make them clip in, but that was easy ). All for $119USD( after shipping, exchange and duty I paid $215CDN ). This one has 6g RAM and 128g ROM storage for music, movies, pictures etc. with an Octacore processor. It was way too cheap for the specs, which is why I believe it was removed from Amazon.

Here‘s some picture after install, and after painting the fascia white:

I installed the Joying 9" Android unit (9 Inch Android Car Autoradio Navigation System For 2007-2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser Bluetooth 5.0). Here is what I did with mine:

I will tell you this, with the OEM Audio +, the systems sounds INCREDIBLE! The equalizer & customization of sound really makes the OEM Audio + system shine! The bass also has a very very nice punch as well (I opted for one subwoofer, not two).

What I will say is after 4 years of owning this unit, I have zero complaints! But, back to my original question...not sure what kind of speakers to get for the rears, but if the 2 Ohm Joying headunit has been working with the OEM Audio + speakers, then I'm thinking 2 Ohms for those rear tweeters should work...

I agree with you about the difference in the sound quality from the OEM speakers with these Android units. I feel like I completely upgraded all of my speakers and added a small sub. My FJ didn’t have the sub option for my FJammer, but it sounds like it does now! The EQ made a huge improvement in the sound. Here’s a picture of my EQ settings:

Hey, just coming back to this.

I have been using the Kenwood Excelon KFC-X2C as the rear tweeters along with the OEM Audio+ upgrade for two weeks and they sound pretty good. No sign of issues using these with the OEM+ upgrade. I cant compare it to stock because my stock rear tweeters have been blown out for a while.
